Without doing any analysis, but just going by general memory of attending almost all of the games, my impression is that in our first 4 seasons in the top league, our records home and away were fairly equal and indeed sometimes our away return was comparable with teams much higher in the league. Without listing them all, I can recall some classic away wins from each season, that brought huge pleasure and encouragement and often turned a tide that threatened to flow against us. You cannot beat travelling home with a tremendous performance and 3 points in the bag. Here are a selection of the wins and you can add in a few hard-fought and well-earned draws as well.

1. Ross County, St Mirren and Inverness near the start, and especially memorably KIlmarnock and Hearts 4-2 near the end.

2. Inverness 4-0, Dundee United (classic O'Donnell goal) and Ross County to just about clinch safety.

3. Kilmarnock 5-2, Dundee United, St Johnstone (twice) and Kilmarnock again to put us safe.

4. Dundee (twice), St Johnstone and Ross County 3-1 in the teeth of Storm Barbara.

Briliant memories and I cannot wait for us to become Kings of the Road again.

Cracking stuff ptd!!

Can I add a number 5?

^ Indeed. One thing I've repeatedly noted since creating Stats Watch is how the Archibald era has been framed with Stats at extreme ends of the spectrum, one minute the greatest of all-time, the next the worst. It's really been quite incredible.

I've written reams on the subject, but here's a couple of season summary extracts to remind ourselves of just a few of those away highs:

SPFL Premiership 2013-14

  • Thistle's away points haul of 24 is a new All-Time club record for the Top Flight, beating the previous best (23) which was set back in 1962-63.
  • Applying 3 points for a win across all 81 of our (official) Top Flight seasons and expressing the points gained as a percentage of those available, this season's away effort (42.11%) is our best in the Premier League since 1964-65 (45.1%).
  • Our away haul of 25 goals is our highest Top Flight tally since season 1977-78 when we netted 27.
  • Our away Goal Difference (-3) stands as a new club record for the Top Flight. Since the criteria was introduced in 1970-71, our previous best (-5) was set in 1972-73.

SPFL Premiership 2015-16

  • Thistle's away points haul of 24 equals the All-Time club-record for the Top Flight, set as recently as 2013-14.
  • Our away Goal Difference (-1) stands as a new club-record for the Top Flight. Since the criteria was introduced in 1970-71, our previous best (-3) was set in 2013-14.

20.12.2017 Celtic [a] L0-2 (SPFL Premiership - game 19)

PROJECTING LOWS FROM ALL ANGLES

  • Jordan Turnbull reaches a new personal-best tally of 10 consecutive competitive appearances, and is one of seven players currently on such a run.
  • For the first time in the Archibald era, 6 Thistle players receive yellow cards in a single match. Looking back, this matches previous highs of six bookings for Jagsmen in 2-2 draw at Fir Park in August, 2003 and in a 4-2 defeat at Brockville in February, 1993.
  • As we sit at the halfway point of the season, Thistle have amassed 49 yellow cards in competitive action. The average in the last 20 years has only been 62. During that period, the most cards received in competitive action in a single season was 81 in 2005-06.
  • Thistle are on course to record a goal difference of -40 which would be a new low since the criteria was introduced in 1970.
  • Thistle have failed to score in 47.4% of their League games this term, and remain on course to register the highest failure rate of any Thistle side in history.
  • Thistle go 25 League games without a win versus Celtic, a run which stretches from 7th October, 1995, to date.

ongoing sequences:

  • 15 away League games without a win, 18th Mar 2017 to date. (Longest run since: 17 games; 16th Aug 2003 to 17th Apr 2004. Club-record: 26 games; 20th Mar 1935 to 29th Aug 1936.)
  • 47 consecutive competitive appearances for Adam Barton, 28th Dec 2016 to date. (Longest run since: Steven Lawless - 53 games; 9th Aug 2015 to 15th Oct 2016. Club-record: Johnny Jackson - 313 games; 28th Aug 1926 to 25th Mar 1933.)
  • 72 away League games without a penalty award, 1st Mar 2014 to date. (A new club-record.)

For a start, something is truly rotten in the defence. Whether it's particular players being honking, a lack of understanding what each other is doing, not giving a monkey's, who knows (do Archie and Shaggy know?).... but it's rotten.

Next, there is clearly a lack of professionalism judging by the yellow cards score alone.

Next, the midfield is abysmally non-creative in going forward, and does a crap job of putting stops to other teams launching attacks by driving right at us. Our "solution"?: Back off, back off, back off, back off.....

Then, our "strikers" appear to be on strike. To be fair, so few opportunities are created for them within a reasonable distance of goal that I feel sorry for them, standing up there stranded, looking helplessly down to the other end of the pitch as yet another goal gets scored against us.

Tho' I'm sure you'll all agree the rest of our game is going swimmingly.

For those of you who've barely been able to sleep a wink for worrying whether we got 6 or 7 yellow cards at Celtic Park, I'm pleased to report that it was only 6 after all, as confirmed to me by the good people at the SFA disciplinary department, who are always very helpful in these matters of, er, great national importance.

As you were.

23.12.2017 Hamilton Academical [h] W1-0 (SPFL Premiership - game 20)

RECORDS EXTENDED

  • In 2017-18, there have now been 14 instances in competitive action where Thistle have not utilised their allocated bench slots, a runaway record for any given season.
  • Thistle's starting line-up, aged 27y, 4m, 30d, is their oldest in a League match since March 2011, when a team some 5 months older started for Jackie McNamara, in a 3-0 win away to Stirling Albion in the SFL First Division.
  • For the first time in over 100 years in competitive action, Thistle keep a third consecutive clean-sheet against the Accies. All eyes on the 4-in-a-row record set in 1911.
  • Archie's Jags go 13 competitive games without defeat against Accies (01.11.2014 to date), extending the H2H record. Similarly, 12 League games without defeat against them does the same.

ongoing sequences:

  • 15 away League games without a win, 18th Mar 2017 to date. (Longest run since: 17 games; 16th Aug 2003 to 17th Apr 2004. Club-record: 26 games; 20th Mar 1935 to 29th Aug 1936.)
  • 48 consecutive competitive appearances for Adam Barton, 28th Dec 2016 to date.

27.12.2017 Aberdeen [a] L0-1 (SPFL Premiership - game 21)

GRIM UP NORTH

  • Thistle's unprecedented bench-record continues, now with 16 instances of shortages in this season's competitive action.
  • Andy McCarthy reaches a new personal-best tally of 3 consecutive competitive appearances, and is one of seven players currently on such a run.
  • Thistle have scored just 0.36 away League goals-per-game this term (4 in 11 games). This is on-course to be an all-time low.
  • Thistle have failed to score in 47.6% of their League games this term, and remain on course to register the highest failure-to-score rate of any Thistle side in history.
  • For the first time in history, Partick Thistle lose eight consecutive games to Aberdeen.
  • Alan Archibald's Thistle finish the calendar year with 1 solitary League win away from home, and duly match the all-time club-record for the category. The pathetic stat was first returned in 1898 and was subsequently matched in 1901, 1937, 1939 and 1970.

30.12.2017 Ross County [h] W2-0 (SPFL Premiership - game 22)

HOME IS WHERE THE POINTS ARE

  • Man-of-the-match Adam Barton makes his 50th consecutive competitive appearance, and in doing so achieves the impressive feat of appearing in every competitive match of the calendar year. Aaron Taylor-Sinclair was the last Jag to do such a thing, appearing in all 43 competitive games of 2013.
  • With his 8th goal against them, Kris Doolan extends his position as Thistle's highest-ever competitve scorer vs. County.
  • Andy McCarthy gets his first assist for Thistle.
  • Jags go 5 games without defeat versus County, and are 1 away from equalling the H2H record of 6, set in 2010.
  • Thistle win 5 out of 6 home fixtures in the top-flight for the first time since Bertie Auld's troops closed the calendar year with 5 straight wins in 1978.
  • An incredible 85% of Thistle's League points have been earned at Firhill in 2017-18. On a "real" basis, this projects to be the second greatest share of all-time, pipped by the imbalanced gather of 85.29% in 1935-36. On a universal "3 pts-per-win" basis, this season's total projects to be third greatest share of all-time, behind 89.13% (1935-36) and 88.24% (1912-13).

ongoing sequences:

  • 16 away League games without a win, 18th Mar 2017 to date. (Longest run since: 17 games; 16th Aug 2003 to 17th Apr 2004. Club-record: 26 games; 20th Mar 1935 to 29th Aug 1936.)
  • 50 consecutive competitive appearances for Adam Barton, 28th Dec 2016 to date. (Longest run since: Steven Lawless - 53 games; 9th Aug 2015 to 15th Oct 2016. Club-record: Johnny Jackson - 313 games; 28th Aug 1926 to 25th Mar 1933.)
  • 73 away League games without a penalty award, 1st Mar 2014 to date. (A new club-record.)

  • 1 month later...

A catch up on 2018; the story so far...

12.01.2018 Shanghai Shenhua [n] W2-1 (Friendly)
A FIRST FOR DANNY

  • Thistle play non-Scottish opposition for the 26th season-in-a-row, further extending the club-record.
  • 20-year-old Jamie Sneddon makes his Thistle debut.
  • 27-year-old Milan Nitrianský plays his last game for Thistle.
  • Danny Devine scores his first goal for Thistle. He becomes the first Northern Irishman to score for Thistle against Chinese opposition in Spain. Ever.

20.01.2018 Queen of the South [a] W2-1 (Scottish Cup 4th Round)
OLD HEADS STAY COOL

  • The oldest starting line-up of the Alan Archibald era (27y, 6m, 4d) ensures victory, helped by a brace from 31-year-old Conor Sammon.
  • Jags go 4 competitive games without defeat at Palmerston, now a 7-year-old run.

23.01.2018 Celtic [h] L1-2 (SPFL Premiership - game 23)
THE GREAT IMPROBABLES

  • 22-year-old Baily Cargill makes his Thistle debut.
  • Thistle's 34th minute penalty award ends the one-way League penalty concessions run which was sitting at 11-in-a-row, 1 shy of the recently set club-record.
  • Conor Sammon scores in a third consecutive competitive game for Thistle.
  • Only a little over 1,600 Jags fans turn up to see Thistle lose a 15th consecutive home League game against Celtic. The odds-defying run is our longest against any team in history.

27.01.2018 St Johnstone [a] W3-1 (SPFL Premiership - game 24)
'ROO FEEDS FISH @ FARMLANDS : - O

  • With an average age of 28y, 0m, 4d, this starting line-up resets the bar as the oldest of Alan Archibald's managerial career. You need to rewind back to March, 2011, to find an older Thistle team.
  • Connor Sammon sets a new personal best of 7 consecutive competitive appearances as a Jag.
  • Steven Lawless gets his 4th competitive goal against St Johnstone; only 7 Jags in history have scored more. Surprisingly, all 4 of Stevie's strikes have came at McDiarmid Park, and Stevie becomes our all-time leading marksman at that venue. As it stands, Kris Doolan (3), Gerry Britton (2) and Ryan Edwards (2) are next in line.
  • It's all going swimmingly for Connor Sammon who scores in a fourth consecutive competitive game for Thistle.
  • Ryan 'Skippy' Edwards bags an assist / goal double, and is the first substitute to do such a thing since Steven Lawless did so on Tuesday, 27th August, 2013, in a 3-1 win (aet) at home to Cowdenbeath in the League Cup.
  • Jags and Saints have now played 14 competitive games without a draw (17.01.2015 to date), an extension of the H2H record.

03.02.2018 Motherwell [a] D1-1 (SPFL Premiership - game 25)
FIR PARK HOODOO CONTINUES

  • Impressively, Thistle keep a first-half clean-sheet for an 8th consecutive game.
  • Kris Doolan nets his 7th competitive goal of the season and joins Blair Spittal at the summit of the competitive goals chart. He's bidding to become the first Thistle player in history to finish as our top scorer in five consecutive seasons, and furthermore could do so in all 3 of the main categories ("All Games", "Competitive" and "League").
  • Thistle go 14 competitive games without a win at Fir Park (10.08.2002 to date), an extension of the H2H record. 13 League games without a win at Fir Park (10.08.2002 to date), also extends the H2H record in that category.
  • With this draw, Thistle avoid what would have been a new club-record of 5 League defeats on the bounce at Fir Park.
  • Dating back to October 2014, Jags have now played 13 competitive games against 'Well, without a repeated outcome.
  • Thistle have now played 75 away League matches without a penalty award, a run which is now only 26 days away from stretching to a whole 4 years.

06.02.2018 Rangers [h] L0-2 (SPFL Premiership - game 26)
THE GREAT IMPROBABLES STRIKE AGAIN

  • Thistle's unprecedented bench-record continues, now with 19 instances of shortages in this season's competitive action.
  • Jags go 15 competitive home games without a win versus Rangers (27.11.1993 to date), now a joint H2H record.
  • It's now 25 League games without a win versus Rangers (11.09.1993 to date), an extension of the H2H record.
  • Somewhat improbably, Thistle are now 30 competitive games without a win versus Rangers (11.09.1993 to date), currently our longest winless streak against any side in competitive action. The H2H record of 32 was set in 1970.

10.02.2018 Celtic [a] L2-3 (Scottish Cup 5th Round)
DOOLAN GOES TOP 5

  • Thistle's 7 matches of 2018 have seen a massive 37 changes to the starting eleven.
  • Kris Doolan nets his 8th competitive goal of 2017-18, and is now just 2 shy of becoming the first Thistle player in history to register a double-figures return in EIGHT consecutive seasons, a feat which would go one better than the SEVEN set by Jimmy Walker back in 1953-54.
  • With his 112th goal, Kris Doolan joins Peter 'Ma Ba' McKennan as our all-time joint 5th scorer in competitive action.
  • Conor Sammon becomes the first Jag since James Grady in 2003 to score in two succesive competitive games versus Celtic. He still has a bit of work to do to catch the club-record holder, Alex Stott, who registered 4-in-a-row between 1951 and 1952.
  • After 10 attempts since 1905, Thistle remain winless in Scottish Cup matches with Celtic.

ongoing sequences:

  • 6 competitive games without a clean-sheet, 20th January 2018 to date. (Longest run since: 7 games; 4th Nov 2017 to 20th Dec 2017. Club-record: 45 games; 27th May 1893 to 18th May 1895.)
  • 9 competitive games since a home draw, 14th October 2017 to date. (Longest run since: 9 games; 1st Apr 2017 to 26th Aug 2017. Club-record: 26 games; 11th Mar 1899 to 13th Oct 1900 & 4th Mar 1944 to 5th May 1945.)
  • 29 consecutive competitive appearances for Ryan Edwards, 8th Aug 2017 to date. (Longest run since: Adam Barton - 54 games; 28th Dec 2016 to 3rd Feb 2018. Club-record: Johnny Jackson - 313 games; 28th Aug 1926 to 25th Mar 1933.)
  • 75 away League games without a penalty award, 1st Mar 2014 to date. (A new club-record.)

Surely when Thistle played Hampton & Richmond and Southend United in, admittedly, closed door friendlies during pre-season that would have extended the streak?

Danny's scored three goals for Thistle. He scored against Dunfermline Athletic at Garscube in June 2016(closed door) and against Cirencester in June 2016 to add to his header against Shanghai Shenua.

Imaginative angle ptd, love it. Saints entry duly and permanently improved.  ;)

And when Stevie Lawless scores at McDiarmid, Thistle win.

Speaking more generally, whereas his near contemporaries  Kris Doolan and Chris Erskine  often score in draws or defeats, my recollection would be that when Stevie scores anywhere , the Jags usually win. Has he ever scored in a defeat?

I can recall Stevie scoring in a 2-2 away draw v Kilmarnock and a 3-3 home draw v Dunfermline. Every other goal I remember was in a victory. This good record was miraculously protected by the Cowdenbeath fog which enveloped the ground when Thistle were 2-1 down, with Stevie as our scorer.

PS Late Edit. Was pondering Stevie's goals on way into work and remembered his absolute stormer against Aberdeen at Firhill, which unfortunately was countered by 2 from Aberdeen. Memory fading a bit but in our first season up, did Stevie score early, before a McFadden inspired Motherwell scored several in response? However, in both cases, Stevie put us into the lead. So, if I can rescue any point from this meandering ramble, it is that Stevie doesn't do late consolations!

I don't know of any club historian or statistician (and I know plenty) who would include unreported-upon closed-door friendlies in their club's streaks, tallies and milestones. I'll stand by my statement, thank you please.

Re Devine, you can forget the Garscube complex game for the reasons stated above. Danny scoring against Cirencester would be news to me and Joe Public. These are the scorers from that night as I have them:
Chris Erskine (1-0, 12 mins); Chris Erskine (2-0, 39 mins); Steven Lawless (3-0, 42 mins); Ryan Edwards (4-0, 63 mins); Mathias Pogba (5-0, 75 mins); Kevin Nisbet (6-0, 81 mins)

This data came from the club channels on the night, albeit there was no video evidence. Further, the sequence as described concurs with 3 independently written match reports (local press, Cirencester website and ptfc.co.uk) which described each and every goal in great detail, and with unanimity. If you have evidence which says otherwise, it better be good...

17.02.2018 Dundee [h] L1-2 (SPFL Premiership - game 27)
POINTS SLIPPING AWAY

  • Thistle's 8 matches of 2018 have now seen an incredible 42 changes to the starting eleven.
  • With an average age of 28y, 1m, 15d, this starting line-up resets the bar as the oldest of Alan Archibald's managerial career.
  • Conor Sammon scores his 7th goal in the last 7 games in which he has appeared. The goal now places him as our outright top-scorer in this season's League campaign, but with a low tally of just 5 goals.
  • Thistle retire with a half-time lead at Firhill for the 7th time in 14 outings, 6 of which have been in the last 8. In the Premiership this term, Celtic are the only other side to have at least a 50% half-time home-win ratio.
  • Amazingly, Thistle (with 23 "pts" from 14 games) are second only to Celtic in this season's half-time home League table.
  • Only 40% of Thistle's League goals have came in the second half, by far the lowest percentage in our League. The Premiership average is 56.6%.
  • Thistle's tally of scoring 0.926 goals-per-game (25 in 27) in this season's League, is on course to be the club's 3rd lowest return of all-time, and the worst since the club-record was set in the relegation season of 1995-96 (29 in 36).
  • Thistle's tally of 0.889 pts-per-game in this season's League is on course to be the club's 8th lowest return of all-time, and the worst since relegation in 2003-04.

ongoing sequences:

  • 7 competitive games without a clean-sheet, 20th January 2018 to date. (Longest run since: 7 games; 4th Nov 2017 to 20th Dec 2017. Club-record: 45 games; 27th May 1893 to 18th May 1895.)
  • 10 competitive games since a home draw, 14th October 2017 to date. (Longest run since: 11 games; 21st Jan 2015 to 9th Aug 2015. Club-record: 26 games; 11th Mar 1899 to 13th Oct 1900 & 4th Mar 1944 to 5th May 1945.)
  • 30 consecutive competitive appearances for Ryan Edwards, 8th Aug 2017 to date.

24.02.2018 Hamilton Academical [a] L1-2 (SPFL Premiership - game 28)
RECORD PENALTY RUN ENDS

  • Thistle are awarded a penalty in an away League game, 4 years and 9 days after receiving their last one; a 4-3 loss at Fir Park way back on 15th February, 2014.
  • Conor Sammon's purple patch continues; the big striker has now bagged 8 goals in his last 8 games for the Jags.
  • In the 11th minute, Accies end a H2H run of 356 minutes without a goal versus Thistle.
  • Thistle have failed to keep a clean-sheet in 13 of their 14 (93%) away League games this term. Only Brechin City and Forfar Athletic (both 100%) have worse records in the 2017-18 SPFL.
  • Thistle lose to Accies for the first time since 23rd August, 2014, 14 games ago. Strangely, Thistle also took the lead that day, and went on to lose 2-1 by conceding a goal at the death.
  • For the first time in 2018, Accies do not lose, ending their run of 5 consecutive defeats.
  • For the second consecutive match, Thistle turn a winning position into defeat. Ian McCall's Jags were the last lot to return such an unlikely scenario, losing 2-1 at home to Stirling Albion and 2-1 away to Queen of the South, way back in September, 2010.

ongoing sequences:

  • 11 competitive games without a clean-sheet away from home, 4th Nov 2017 to date. (Longest run since: 11 games; 10th Aug 2013 to 1st Jan 2014. Club-record: 89 games; 31st Oct 1885 to 23rd Jan 1897.)
