03.04.2018 Ross County [a] L0-4 (SPFL Premiership - game 32)
ARCHIBALD'S MANAGERIAL NADIR

  • To the bemusement of many pundits and fans, Kris Doolan's game-time percentage is falling ever-lower. Thistle's joint-5th highest competitive scorer of all-time is confined to the bench for the entirety of the 90 minutes here, despite being the club's all-time highest scorer against County with 8 goals. The striker has now only seen 48.9% of the action in 2017-18, the lowest ratio of all his seasons spent fully at Firhill.
  • For the second time in the Archibald era, Thistle fail to score in a 4th consecutive competitive match (there was a run of 5 in August/September 2015). The all-time club-record (6) was set by George Easton's side in 1921 and equalled by Lambie's Jags in 1999.
  • Thistle lose to nil for the third consecutive time in the League. The club-record (4) was set in 1895 and equalled in 1988, 2010 and 2015.
  • Thistle have now failed to score in 10 of their 17 away League matches this term. The club record (11) was set in 1912-13 and equalled twice; in 1919-20 and 2014-15.
  • In all, Thistle have failed to score in 15 of this season's 32 League matches. Depressingly, the 46.9% ratio remains on course to be the highest failure rate of all-time.
  • Away from home in the League, Thistle have kept just one solitary clean-sheet in over 13 months of action.
  • The record books are re-written as Thistle suffer their heaviest ever defeat to County. County have scored more goals in this single League game than Thistle have in their last 8 combined.
  • Thistle's goal difference plummets to -30 and is on course to set a new club-record. Since the criteria was introduced in 1970-71, the highest deficit of -33 was set in 1995-96.

07.04.2018 Kilmarnock [h] L0-1 (SPFL Premiership - game 33)
BRUTAL STATS GALORE

  • There's no appearance for Ryan Edwards, ending a run of 8 months not out for the player. The unsettled nature of the Thistle eleven at the moment (a ridiculous running tally of 66 changes in 14 games in 2018) is underlined by the fact that Baily Cargill (11) is the only player to currently be sitting with a double figures unbroken run in competitive action.
  • Thistle lose to nil for the fourth consecutive time in the League, and, quite remarkably, Archie's Jags equal the club-record which they themselves already jointly hold. The record run of 4 was first set in 1895 and matched in 1988, 2010 and 2015.
  • Following a similar run in August/September 2015, Thistle fail to score in a 5th consecutive competitive match. The all-time club-record (6) was set by George Easton's side in 1921 and equalled by Lambie's Jags in 1999.
  • Thistle have played 531 minutes without a Premiership goal, and currently have the embarrassing distinction of sitting with the longest goal-less run in the 10 main British Leagues of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
  • Thistle have failed to score in 16 of this season's 33 League matches. The 48.5% ratio remains on course to be the club's highest failure rate of all-time.
  • Thistle's goal difference falls to -31 and is on course to set a new club-record.
  • Thistle's goals-per-game ratio in the League falls to 0.79 (26 in 33) and is on course to register as the club's lowest return of all-time.
  • Thistle have lost to nil in 42.4% (14) of their League games this season, a ratio which is on course to be the club's worst of all-time.
  • Thistle have failed to score against Kilmarnock in 4 successive games at Firhill.
  • For the first time since season 1960-61, Thistle are whitewashed by Killie in the League; 3 defeats out of 3.
  • Thistle haven't beaten Killie at Firhill since Alex Burns netted a hat-trick in a top-flight encounter back in November, 2002. It's now 11 competitive home games without a win since then, and yet another unwanted H2H record is subsequently extended.

ongoing sequences:

  • 10 competitive games without a win, 3rd Feb 2018 to date. (Longest run since: 13 games; 9th May 2015 to 26th Sep 2015. Club-record: 26 games; 28th Nov 1908 to 25th Aug 1909.)
  • 12 consecutive competitive appearances for Baily Cargill, 23rd Jan 2018 to date. (Longest run since: Ryan Edwards - 35 games; 8th Aug 2017 to 3rd Apr 2018. Club-record: Johnny Jackson - 313 games; 28th Aug 1926 to 25th Mar 1933.)
  • 14 competitive games without a clean-sheet away from home, 4th Nov 2017 to date. (Longest run since: 14 games; 31st Jan 1996 to 5th Oct 1996. Club-record: 89 games; 31st Oct 1885 to 23rd Jan 1897.)

4 points out of 54 in matches against the top six. For a team once know as the Unpredictables, Thistle are now the most boringly predictable against the better teams in the league.

So let's not be too quick to condemn the split. It gives us five matches against teams we have already beaten at least once this season, so we know it can be done.

All very valid points. Doing well against our peer group has been a recurring feature of our 5 top-flight seasons under the Arch; we've either been at the very top or near to the top of these "mini-Leagues". This season, there's very little between the bottom six:

In the the bottom half round robin, we have nothing to fear except fear itself, although a six point gain on either Dundee or Hamilton now looks highly unlikely (damn those last minute goals.)

In reality, I'd expect us to find enough to finish in the play-off place, where I reckon it'll be a tough 2-legged affair with the energetic and aggressive Livingston, a tie which could go all the way to the wire.

  • 2 weeks later...

TJR. Thought I would cheer you up by asking you about a stat which does not include Partick Thistle Nil.

Doncaster' s balancing post-split numbercruncher has awarded us 3 away league games against St Johnstone. We also played away to St Johnstone in the League Cup. Assuming that our match proceeds as normal a week on Saturday, will 4 completed away games against the same team in one season be a record? I say "completed", as the only instance I can recall which comes anywhere near it was in our memorable promotion season when we started 4 different games at Central Park, Cowdenbeath, the first in the Challenge Cup, followed by 3 league encounters in quick succession. As we will all happily remember the first league game was abandoned due to fog and therefore was not completed.

It is difficult to see how 4 could have been beaten in the olden days when there was only one away league fixture per team per season, as it would need an incredible combination of cup draws and multiple replays to get to 4, far less 5. However, I appreciate that there may have been extra competitions such as the Glasgow Cup or the Summer Cup or wartime leagues or perhaps a special series of challenge matches that threw teams together more often.

Over to you......

We could have played Killie or Clyde 4 times away in the early 80’s in the days of multiple  SC replays and 2 league away matches. Remember we also had an abandoned SC replay against Clyde as well. I suppose it’s also possible we’ve played a team in 2 away league games and then away in 2 (or even 3) cup comps since then, but I’m TJR will have an answer :)

also worth pointing out we played away at Perth in last season’s SC so we would have played them 4 times in a 12 month perdiod.

......or 7 times away in 2 seasons which must be another record.

I do recall one season maybe about 10 years ago when I got lost in the same roundabout system in Livingston more times than I care to remember. Do not think it can have been as many as 4 times but it certainly seemed like it.

Slightly different but regarding Livinghell and around the same time, we played them 8 times over a 12 month period. Given that includes a close season of roughly three months, we were playing them effectively once every five weeks during the football season.

If we somehow manage to go up a place and are in the play offs I hope we're matched against Livingston. Then if the worst was to happen we can at least console ourselves knowing we won't have to visit Almondvale (or whatever it's called this week) twice next season.

21.04.2018 Hamilton Academical [h] W2-1 (SPFL Premiership - game 34)
MAGNIFICENT DOOLAN MARKS LAMBIE DAY

  • At a highly charged and emotional Firhill, Thistle play their first game in front of "The John Lambie Stand", the North end being newly named in tribute of the great man who died, aged 77, on 10th April, 2018.
  • Kris Doolan becomes the first Thistle player in history to score 100 League goals. It's his 9th competitive goal against the Accies.
  • With his 113th competitive goal for the Jags, Kris now sits as our outright 5th Top Scorer of all-time. Next target is 4th placed Jimmy Walker on 118 goals.
  • With his sterling efforts in 2015-16, Kris remains the only player in Scottish football history to have scored in all five post-split games in a single campaign. It's 1 down and 4 to go to equal his own mighty record!
  • The battle for top scorer in competitive action this term could go all the way to the wire as Conor Sammon and Kris Doolan battle it out on 9 goals apiece. Doolan is striving to become the first Thistle player in history to finish as top competitive scorer in FIVE successive seasons.
  • One more goal for the legendary number nine will see him become the first Thistle player in history to register a double-figures competitive goals tally in EIGHT consecutive seasons.
  • Ryan Edwards bags his 8th competitive goal for Thistle, 3 of which have came against the Accies.
  • Thistle go 8 competitive home games without defeat versus Hamilton; the club-record of 11 was set in 1946.
  • Just as it did on 23rd December, a home win over the Accies lifts Thistle off the bottom of the table.

ongoing sequences:

  • 13 consecutive competitive appearances for Baily Cargill, 23rd Jan 2018 to date. (Longest run since: Ryan Edwards - 35 games; 8th Aug 2017 to 3rd Apr 2018. Club-record: Johnny Jackson - 313 games; 28th Aug 1926 to 25th Mar 1933.)
  • 14 competitive games without a clean-sheet away from home, 4th Nov 2017 to date. (Longest run since: 14 games; 31st Jan 1996 to 5th Oct 1996. Club-record: 89 games; 31st Oct 1885 to 23rd Jan 1897.)

Kris Doolan's achievements for the Jags would have been outstanding at any point in the club's history.

However, being the first to achieve a century of league goals for the club in an era when there is far more opportunity and temptation for players to move clubs is particularly noteworthy.

His early induction into the club Hall of Fame would be appropriate.

Not only do his achievements thoroughly merit it, the manner in which he conducts himself and represents the club off the park is exemplary.

Thanks TJR - astonishing detail as always.

Alex O'Hara getting 53 in 8 seasons jumped out at me, because I saw most of them!!

Fervently hope that Kris can be with us long enough to achieve number 2 on that list, which is doable on the remainder of his contract assuming it is honoured.

Squiddy and Kris for half a dozen more before the end of this season anyone?

Brilliant TJR. Here was I thinking that I had hit on an all time record, then you come along and tell me it has been done 3 times before. I should have remembered Inverness, the last minute Martin Hardie winner and the invasion of the marauding Santas, Scott Paterson's free kick and the mad journey up and down in the driving rain, and  the flat showing on the final day livened up by Johnny Lambie leading the singing at the end.

The Falkirk cup ties live in the memory. Kris Doolan earning the replay, where Chris Erskine scored the winner. Squiddy also notched an excellent double in the 3-2 win at Brockville where I do believe the rather unmemorable Martin Grehan popped up with 3 assists.

Is it really the case that we played Falkirk 3 times in the League within 10 days? Why on earth was that and indeed is that a record?

Finally a memory tester. Can anyone recall whose run and cross set up Kris Doolan for the equaliser in the 2-2 cup draw at Falkirk?

In 10-11 these seven games v Falkirk averaged one every 7th game.  Was sick of the sight of them by the end.

Got a strong feeling to add to that two of the games were rearranged fixtures after late call offs (one at Firhill, one in Falkirk). I turned up for both postponements so  I must have traveled to see Jags play Falkirk NINE times that season.

I do believe you are absolutely right. I remember both the called off games. At the away match, we had walked half way across the "Dead Marshes" between the housing estate and the stadium when the dreaded words "the game's aff" tickled our eardrums. Did Falkirk not go ahead and hold a practice match to show that the ground was playable?

The dysfunctionalism surrounding the fixtures continued into the cup tie. Falkirk did a Hamilton and opened only one turnstile, insisting on charging an unadvertised  non-round figure as the price and taking an age to count and issue the change along with a piece of compulsory but superfluous paper. Our first goal was scored at the far end when many supporters were still outside the ground making their way up the not particularly long queue watching the local snails jogging past them.

Still waiting an answer on who set up Kris Doolan's goal.

Erskine.

I am going with substitute Shaun Fraser who powered down the right wing, hit the byeline and delivered a cross which Kris Doolan scooped over the keeper.

Fraser was a powerfully built lad who had converted from rugby to football. He was in the development squad of the day and had a few promising substitute outings for the first team and I think scored in a 6-0 or similar victory against someone at Firhill.

He vanished from the scene almost as quickly as he appeared. Does anyone know what happened to him and did he he have or indeed is he still having a positive career with either the round or the oval ball?
