  1. Anybody know how we got on against them and what was the Motherwell game like? I thought somebody on here would have sneaked a peek!
  2. Welcome Kenny. I liked your interview on Jagzone and I like what I hear from you in your frequent Sportsound contributions. The fires are still burning bright and I can give quite a few examples of sportsmen who go on successfully much longer than average. I think you labour the point, and it is a good one, that your ideas align well the manager's, too. Go for it! And I hope you enjoy your time at Firhill because the club needs all the geeing up that people can give it.
  3. That photo makes me feel really sad. What a Thistle man he was and we saw him off. Just VERY sad.
  4. Sportsound has had Miller on quite a number of times in the last year and he is a million miles away from being "thick".
  5. I have a close friend who was very friendly with Sandy Jardine and the latter confided that , after Gullane, the Rangers team was too tired to play football on the Saturday. Jardine said he could hardly drag one leg after another.
  6. The new direction might be winning more games and stopping being soft touches in the leagues and maybe getting to Cup semis and finals? That would be grand because if the likes of Inverness and Ayr can do it maybe WE can as well. Just a thought.
  7. Stuart Bannigan has been kicking around Scottish football for an age and the BBC still manage , on their match report today, to call him BRANNIGAN. I thought the first time it might have been a typo but, no, they did it three times. Just what sort of people do they employ? And we pay a licence for its ineptitude.
  8. Was quite noticeable in Archie's interview for tomorrow's game that travelling up tonight takes away an excuse for the players. And he used the word "excuse" a couple of times. So after hearing that interview I was listening to Ali McC on BT before tonight's match in Paisley and he was talking about " the modern player" who he says seems to look for excuses. He was talking about discontent in the St Mirren dressing room with Stubbs and thus the latter's quick sacking. Managers seem to be really up against it and there is obviously an agreement between McCoist and Archibald on this topic. Or at least I think they are saying the same thing. Food for thought? Discuss?
  9. What did folk think of the Manager on Sportsound tonight? I thought he did okay.
  10. BB I am just dying to see that "nonchalant swagger"!!! Brill!!
  11. Can't believe that people are not applying common sense / thinking logically about the pass back incident. It is no different from a situation where the goalie takes a touch then picks it up. A free kick all day! Why are people mystified? Anyway! We got away with it!
  12. First game at Broomfield in a 3-0 reverse and we were awful. I was about 12 in 1958 and my next game was against Airdrie again, at Firhill and It was another 3-0 defeat on Grand National day. Pitch had no grass on it and ball would have bounced over a house and the Airdrie goalie - Beaton, I think, was able to kick colossal distances. Why did I persist? Looking back, I don't know, but I'm glad I did despite some huge disappointments over 60 years.
  13. Barnet looked a super team against Brentford earlier in the week. Hardly gave the ball away and coped well with a side several divisions above them. Wouldn't it be nice if we have turned a corner and start being stuffy/hard to beat and able to give the fans surprises occasionally? One thing about the Jags in the last thirty odd years we are pretty predictable and not in a good way either. Gone are the days when we whipped an about to win the league/ wonderful Dundee team 3-0 at Firhill after they had won 5-1 at Ibrox. That Dundee team got to the semis of the European Cup the following year. Gary's imports just MIGHT change the mould for the better; fingers firmly crossed!
  14. Thanks AJ for comment and I am thinking of you and your loss as I write this. Healing can take a long time and I know that you are proud of what your son achieved in his all too short life.
  15. The storm of 1968 was Sunday night into Monday if I remember correctly. It sticks in my memory because a good pal was killed in a car crash on Thursday 18th January that year and his last Jags match was the 2-2 draw at home to Motherwell in December (?) He had graduated from Strathclyde in 1967 but , poor soul, didn't get much of a working career before he was taken. Sad memories of all those years ago.
  16. I have a tear in my eye right now ..... I live half a mile from the Macaroni Arena and am sorely tempted to start going there!! What has happened to my team?
  17. One thing about the Jags in the last 20 months we have lost the unpredictable tag completely!! Everything we do is utterly predictable. When was the last time we were surprised by anything involving Partick Thistle?
  18. George in his pomp was like the proverbial excrement off a digging implement and won several sprints at athletics meets. Did not know he had been ill but glad to hear he is now okay. I still bump into his brother occasionally and he did not live the monk like existence of his younger sibling but is still going strong and must be getting on for 90 now. We could certainly do with a few of George's goals just now. He scored a good number against the Celtic and was linked with a move to the blue part of the city at one time in his career. Thankfully for us it never happened.
  19. Yup Ballintore Jag, I wasn't at the 10-2 game but both Thistle goals were scored by the man who made me a supporter, George Smith. He was a student teacher at Bathgate Academy and I was in the school's primary department. Eventually he discovered I was a Jags supporter and he was my hero and his dad, a local baker, took me to a few games. I bumped into George a few years ago and he looks a million dollars - never been a drinker or smoker and he is now is 82 ( I discovered that I was born on his 10th birthday relatively recently - what a coincidence!! 1st June and we share it with Bob Monkhouse, Marilyn Monroe , Pat Boone and Morgan Freeman) Should be in the Hall of Fame but I'm sure George wouldn't cope with the "refreshments" at such an event - I know he has been asked. Quite a few more goals than Dools to his credit too.
  20. Mulguy Jag, it was 5-1 in the second leg at Firhill against St Johnstone in the quarters. What a night! Think Lambie was in the Saintees team? Remember we lost ten twice in a few months in late fifties - 10-2 at home to Hibs and 10-1 at East End Park to keep Dunfermline from being relegated. Those were the days. Round about that time too Hibs won 11-1 in a league match at Broomfield and signed the Hibs reserve goalie , Lawrie Leslie, who let in a barrowload in a relatively short period but got capped for Scotland. He was a hero of mine and went on to a very successful career at West Ham. Different times!
  21. It's the utter consistency of us that pisses me off more than anything. We have done the same things for eighteen months under two different managers. Consider: 1) always lose at least one daft goal, 2) always pathetic with set pieces; 3) always try to go down the wings and fail miserably with crosses,4) defence always looks as if they have never been introduced to one another...... I could go on but I'm sure you get the picture. it's only a game, lads!
  22. Hope he signs somebody who likes getting into the opposition penalty area! That would be a change.
  23. Deep in the recesses of my mind I can remember Gary H playing in defence not long after he signed for us. He was AWFUL, laughably bad, almost! And then he moved to midfield and we all know how good he was for us there. Fingers crossed he can do something for us because he doesn't need to be hugely creative to be better than those trying to bluff the opposition currently.
  24. I'm inclined to believe the sincerity of the smile on Mr Harkins' face during his interview. Happy to be back. I remember how he was for us and there is still a player there at this level. Now for a couple of central defenders and somebody to put the ball in the net!
  25. I am lost in admiration for what Livi have achieved so far with virtually no supporters and no money. Never in our recent time in the top league did we EVER look like achieving the sort of results they have been getting. Drawing with the Champions, beating the Ibrox lot, drawing at Tynecastle and then murdering the happy Hearts at the Tony Macaroni, beating Hibs then getting a draw at Easter Road. if we had got near some of THAT in recent seasons we would have been, as supporters, absolutely bursting with pride. Then it's down to this season and we are a soft shambles; guaranteed to give away ridiculously poor goals and failing to score or even get into the opposition box game after game after game.... I despair!
