21.10.2017 Dundee [h] W2-1 (SPFL Premiership - game 10)

MILES STOREY, FIRST GOAL GLORY

  • Thistle's high level of penalty concessions continues; now 8 in the last 18 League games.
  • Tomáš Cerný makes his first-ever Firhill penalty save. The Top Cat has now saved 3 from 10 during his time at the club, all in the Premiership.
  • Thistle have won both games controlled by Euan Anderson this season; a 3-0 League Cup win at Perth and now this 2-1 home League win vs Dundee.
  • Ryan Edwards nets his second competitive goal of the season, and has now scored on each of the two occasions Euan Anderson was in charge. (copyright M. Max!)
  • On his 8th appearance, Miles Storey scores his first goal for Thistle. It's the first time a player's scoring account has been opened with a last-minute winner since Alex Pirrie, whose one and only counter was bagged dramatically with just 30 seconds left on the clock in a towsy top-flight encounter at Cathkin Park on 22nd November, 1947. In those bygone pre-substitute days, your lame full-back was turfed out to the wing to make a nuisance of himself and this Alex did heroically with his last-gasp header to make it Third Lanark 1, Partick Thistle 2. Callum Booth take note! (note: a handful of candidates from friendly matches have unknown goal timings)
  • Archie's Jags defeat Dundee for the fourth successive time, all in the League, and are now just 1 away from equalling the H2H record of 5-in-a-row which was set by Lambie's Jags in 1993.

ongoing sequences:

  • 9 away League games without a win, 18th Mar 2017 to date. (Longest run since: 9 games; 10th Mar 2007 to 6th Oct 2007. Club-record: 26 games; 20th Mar 1935 to 29th Aug 1936.)
  • 16 League games without a clean-sheet, 15th Apr 2017 to date. (Longest run since: 18 games; 3rd May 2003 to 29th Nov 2003. Club-record: 46 games; 20th Apr 1908 to 30th Oct 1909.)
  • 38 consecutive competitive appearances for Adam Barton, 28th Dec 2016 to date. (Longest run since: Kris Doolan - 39 games; 15th Oct 2016 to 5th Aug 2017. Club-record: Johnny Jackson - 313 games; 28th Aug 1926 to 25th Mar 1933.)
  • 66 away League games without a penalty award, 1st Mar 2014 to date. (A new club-record.)

Dundee addendum...

  • On the day that Alan Archibald matches John Lambie's final tally of managing Thistle in 162 top-flight games, he moves ahead of his old gaffer in terms of wins; 43 to 42.

24.10.2017 Hamilton Academical [a] D0-0 (SPFL Premiership - game 11)

TRIPLE RECORD NIGHT FOR ARCHIE'S JAGS

  • Once again, Thistle fail to fill the 7 permitted bench slots, an abnormality which is now into double figures this term.
  • For the first time in almost 8 years, Thistle make no substitions. Ian McCall started and finished with the same eleven in a 2-1 League defeat at the Caledonian Stadium back in January, 2010.
  • The collective earn their first League clean-sheet in over 6 months.
  • Thistle go 12 competitive games without defeat versus Accies (01.11.2014 to date), extending the H2H record.
  • Thistle go 11 League games without defeat versus Accies (01.11.2014 to date), setting a new H2H record.
  • Thistle go 7 competitive games without an away defeat versus Accies (16.03.2013 to date), setting a new H2H record.

ongoing sequences:

  • 10 away League games without a win, 18th Mar 2017 to date. (Longest run since: 14 games; 11th Sep 2004 to 9th Apr 2005. Club-record: 26 games; 20th Mar 1935 to 29th Aug 1936.)
  • 39 consecutive competitive appearances for Adam Barton, 28th Dec 2016 to date. (Longest run since: Kris Doolan - 39 games; 15th Oct 2016 to 5th Aug 2017. Club-record: Johnny Jackson - 313 games; 28th Aug 1926 to 25th Mar 1933.)
  • 67 away League games without a penalty award, 1st Mar 2014 to date. (A new club-record.)

Last year at about this time I think. At McDiarmid.

I can recall 3 relatively recent 2-1 wins at McDiarmid. Our scorers

Miller & Lawless

Booth & Lawless

Doolan & Osman

Finding it hard to remember both teams scoring at Firhill in a league match so will need TJR's help here. There was a crazy 4-4 cup match that we lost on penalties.

Close!

The last ten clashes in Maryhill have seen a team win to nil(or a 0-0 draw).

The last time both teams scored was in 2007 in "injury time gate" where we, somehow, blew a 2-0 lead at 90 minutes to draw 2-2. Paul Sheerin netted a penalty. We faffed the kick off and Deuchar stole a point for the Perthside side.

The last time both teams scored in Maryhill is, understandably, forgettable - Thistle 1 Saints 5. The same day Ross McCabe got stood on by Dougie Imrie at New Douglas Park, causing the best to come out of the Jags support with a banner/bedsheet of support seven days later.

The time before that was the epic 4-4 thriller

28.10.2017 St Johnstone [h] W1-0 (SPFL Premiership - game 12)

W-L-W-L-W-L-W-L-W

  • An unprecedented H2H run of 4 consecutive competitive matches in Perth is broken with this Maryhill clash.
  • Adam Barton racks up his 40th consecutive competitive appearance and is bidding to be an ever-present in the caldendar year, 2017.
  • Jordan Turnbull registers his first assist as a Jag.
  • Miles Storey scores for the second succesive match at Firhill.
  • 31-year-old Martin Woods makes his debut appearance.
  • For the first time in this League campaign, Thistle retire with no yellow cards against.
  • The remarkable H2H story between these sides continues with a NINTH succesive alternating win in competitive action. Surprisingly, it's only the second longest such streak in all of our H2H relationships. Between 1915 and 1923, Partick Thistle and Raith Rovers played out 12 alternating wins - every one on home territory. The sequence would have stretched to 14 had the venue order not been switched in season 1923-24!
  • There have now been 13 consecutive Jags v Saints competitive matches without a draw, a H2H record.
  • The last 10 Firhill clashes between these two have ended with a nil in the scoreline.

ongoing sequences:

  • 10 away League games without a win, 18th Mar 2017 to date. (Longest run since: 14 games; 11th Sep 2004 to 9th Apr 2005. Club-record: 26 games; 20th Mar 1935 to 29th Aug 1936.)
  • 40 consecutive competitive appearances for Adam Barton, 28th Dec 2016 to date. (Longest run since: Ade Azeez - 46 games; 15th Jul 2016 to 21st May 2017. Club-record: Johnny Jackson - 313 games; 28th Aug 1926 to 25th Mar 1933.)
  • 67 away League games without a penalty award, 1st Mar 2014 to date. (A new club-record.)

04.11.2017 Ranges [a] L0-3 (SPFL Premiership - game 13)

AN IBROX RETURN FOR GAZZA

  • There have now been 12 instances where Thistle have not filled their allocated bench slots this term. To put that into context, since Thistle won promotion in 2013 there have only been 4 matches in which our Premiership opponents have been short on the bench.
  • For the first time in 8 months (the 1-0 Scottish Cup loss in March at Pittodrie), Thistle field the same eleven for the second game-in-a-row.
  • Gary Fraser appears for the first time since he retired with injury after 12 minutes of a 1-0 Tuesday night Firhill win over Dundee United on 5th April 2016 - a gap of 1y, 6m, 30d.
  • Thistle go 29 competitive games without a win versus Rangers (11.09.1993 to date), currently our longest winless streak against any side in competitive action.
  • 24 League games without a win versus Rangers (11.09.1993 to date), resets the H2H record.

19.11.2017 Heart of Midlothian [a] D1-1 (SPFL Premiership - game 14)

ANOTHER MILESTONE FOR DOOLAN

  • Thistle fail to fill the player's bench slots for the 4th consecutive game.
  • Kris Doolan becomes only the third player to score 50 goals in the SPFL Premiership, following on from Leigh Griffiths (68) and Adam Rooney (61).
  • Thistle go 5 competitive games unbeaten against Hearts, our longest such run against them since the H2H record (13) was set in 1983.

02.12.2017 Hibernian [h] L0-1 (SPFL Premiership - game 15)

DAMNING STATS

  • Thistle have failed to keep a clean-sheet in 15 consecutive competitive games against Hibs, the longest run since the H2H record (22) was set in 1973.
  • Shockingly, the class of 2017-18 are on course to register as the least potent Thistle side in League history. The current return of 0.8 goals-per-game (12/15), if maintained, would be even worse than the appalling club-record of 0.806 goals-per-game (29/36) set by Murdo MacLeod's Thistle in season 1995-96.
  • Thistle have failed to score in 7 of their 15 (46.7%) League games this term. If maintained, this would be the highest failure rate ever, with the exisiting club-record standing at 44.4% (16/36) set in 1995-96.
  • With a meagre 0.73 points-per-game in this season's League, Alan Archibald's side are on course to register the 6th lowest ppg tally in the club's history.

ongoing sequences:

  • 12 away League games without a win, 18th Mar 2017 to date. (Longest run since: 14 games; 11th Sep 2004 to 9th Apr 2005. Club-record: 26 games; 20th Mar 1935 to 29th Aug 1936.)
  • 43 consecutive competitive appearances for Adam Barton, 28th Dec 2016 to date. (Longest run since: Ade Azeez - 46 games; 15th Jul 2016 to 21st May 2017. Club-record: Johnny Jackson - 313 games; 28th Aug 1926 to 25th Mar 1933.)
  • 69 away League games without a penalty award, 1st Mar 2014 to date. (A new club-record.)

If anybody needed it pointed out to them, these stats do it.Shooting practice for every player this week must be on the cards. After Storey scoring 2 winning goals in recent weeks I thought this would give him confidence, but it didn't look that way yesterday. I as really surprised he got motm yesterday.

You are right about the shooting practise. I watch the warm up at games, paying attention to the shooty in bit. Rarely does a jags player hit the target. In contrast, the opposition almost always hit the target.

Re Storey, I don’t think he is a team player. He very rarely passes to one of his teammates, instead going for it himself, which doesn’t come off very often

09.12.2017 Kilmarnock [a] L1-5 (SPFL Premiership - game 16)

ALARM BELLS

  • Danny Devine sets a new personal best of 13 consecutive competitive appearances as a Jag.
  • Chris Erskine, who was Thistle's top competitive scorer in 2012-13 with 16 goals, joins Blair Spittal at the top of this season's chart, with both players now on 6 goals apiece.
  • 9 consecutive penalty awards in Thistle's League games have went to the opposition.
  • Thistle lose 5 League goals to Kilmarnock in a single match for only the third time in history, following on from a 1-5 loss in 1960 and a 0-5 loss in 1985, all at Rugby Park.
  • The class of 2017-18 have conceded 1.81 goals-per-game in the League. If maintained, they will register as the leakiest Thistle defence since 1974-75 (1.82 gpg).
  • Thistle's points-per-game total falls to 0.69 in the League for this season, now on course to be the 5th lowest total of all-time (levelling all seasons to 3 pts-per-win).
  • Thistle fans haven't seen an away day League win on a Saturday since Abdul Osman's last-minute winner at McDiarmid Park, more than 13 months ago.

ongoing sequences:

  • 13 away League games without a win, 18th Mar 2017 to date. (Longest run since: 14 games; 11th Sep 2004 to 9th Apr 2005. Club-record: 26 games; 20th Mar 1935 to 29th Aug 1936.)

  • 70 away League games without a penalty award, 1st Mar 2014 to date. (A new club-record.)

13.12.2017 Motherwell [h] W3-2 (SPFL Premiership - game 17)

DIG THE NEW BREED

  • Well, it had to happen sometime… for the first time since winning promotion, none of the title winning squad of 2012-13 appear in Thistle's starting eleven. (© M. Max Productions)
  • Niall Keown (13) and Martin Woods (2) are the latest to reach new personal best tallies in terms of consecutive competitive appearances. There are now seven players currently on such runs, the others being: Adam Barton (45), Blair Spittal (15), Danny Devine (14), Paul McGinn (13) and Miles Storey (11).
  • In competitive action, Blair Spittal once-again sits outright top of both the scorers (7) and the assists (4) chart for 2017-18.
  • Conor Sammon scores his first goal for Thistle.
  • Miles Storey registers the second double-assist of 2017-18, following on from Blair Spittal, who did so against Aberdeen back in August.
  • As anyone paying close attention to Stats Watch knows, Motherwell were destined not to win this match. These two sides have now played 12 successive competitive games without a repeated outcome (04.10.2014 to date).
  • Thistle beat Motherwell for the EIGHTH time in the last 10 competitive games at Firhill.
  • Alan Archibald maintains his 100% birthday wins record as a manager, this victory following a 4-0 triumph on his 37th at the Caledonian Stadium on the 13th December 2014. With only a 50% birthday win record as a player, he's clearly aging well!

ongoing sequences:

  • 13 away League games without a win, 18th Mar 2017 to date. (Longest run since: 14 games; 11th Sep 2004 to 9th Apr 2005. Club-record: 26 games; 20th Mar 1935 to 29th Aug 1936.)
  • 45 consecutive competitive appearances for Adam Barton, 28th Dec 2016 to date. (Longest run since: Ade Azeez - 46 games; 15th Jul 2016 to 21st May 2017. Club-record: Johnny Jackson - 313 games; 28th Aug 1926 to 25th Mar 1933.)
  • 70 away League games without a penalty award, 1st Mar 2014 to date. (A new club-record.)

One rather strange stat is that the Alan Archibald 12 days of Christmas song has been commenced in both the last 2 home games but has effectively been silenced by a goal on both occasions.

Against Hibs we began the second half well, prompting the song to start, but on the fifth or sixth day Adam Barton deflated the optimism by his own goal. Some brave souls soldiered on for a few more verses but the song petered out before its finale. This Wednesday the 12 Days rang out again following Spittal's opener, but then the huge celebrations occasioned by Ryan Edwards' fine finish (and kangaroo hop) broke in and by the time the excitement died down, the singers had forgotten what song they were on and went on to different tunes.

TJR, this unique stat should appear in your regular spoiler until the run ends.

16.12.2017 Dundee [a] L0-3 (SPFL Premiership - game 18)

AWAY DAY DISASTER ZONE

  • 24 out of the last 26 penalties in Thistle's League games have went to the opposition, a startling run, completely without precedent.
  • The current run of one-way League penalty concessions now stretches to 11-in-a-row. Surprisingly, this is not the club-record. The actual club-record of 12-in-a-row lies with, er, Archie's Jags, set between September 2014 and February 2016. Before all of this craziness, the worst-known run was only 9, set between September 1913 and Augsut 1914.
  • Away from home in the League, 14 consecutive penalty awards have now went to the opposition, from August 2014 to date. Needless to say, this is a club-record.
  • Thistle have scored just 0.44 away League goals-per-game this term (4 in 9 games). This is on-course to be the lowest return since 1912-13, and the second lowest ratio of all-time.
  • Thistle have conceded 2.22 away League goals-per-game this term (20 in 9 games). This is on-course to be the highest concession rate in almost 40 years.
  • The class of 2017-18 have returned 0.33 League pts-per-game away from home (3 pts in 9 games). This is on-course to be the lowest return since 1935-36, and the 4th lowest return of all-time.
  • Failure to win at either Celtic Park or Pittodrie will leave Thistle with one away League win in the entire calendar year, matching the somewhat pathetic club-record which was set in 1898 and equalled in 1901, 1937, 1939 and 1970.

ongoing sequences:

  • 14 away League games without a win, 18th Mar 2017 to date. (Longest run since: 14 games; 11th Sep 2004 to 9th Apr 2005. Club-record: 26 games; 20th Mar 1935 to 29th Aug 1936.)
  • 46 consecutive competitive appearances for Adam Barton, 28th Dec 2016 to date. (Longest run since: Ade Azeez - 46 games; 15th Jul 2016 to 21st May 2017. Club-record: Johnny Jackson - 313 games; 28th Aug 1926 to 25th Mar 1933.)
  • 71 away League games without a penalty award, 1st Mar 2014 to date. (A new club-record.)

Without doing any analysis, but just going by general memory of attending almost all of the games, my impression is that in our first 4 seasons in the top league, our records home and away were fairly equal and indeed sometimes our away return was comparable with teams much higher in the league. Without listing them all, I can recall some classic away wins from each season, that brought huge pleasure and encouragement and often turned a tide that threatened to flow against us. You cannot beat travelling home with a tremendous performance and 3 points in the bag. Here are a selection of the wins and you can add in a few hard-fought and well-earned draws as well.

1. Ross County, St Mirren and Inverness near the start, and especially memorably KIlmarnock and Hearts 4-2 near the end.

2. Inverness 4-0, Dundee United (classic O'Donnell goal) and Ross County to just about clinch safety.

3. Kilmarnock 5-2, Dundee United, St Johnstone (twice) and Kilmarnock again to put us safe.

4. Dundee (twice), St Johnstone and Ross County 3-1 in the teeth of Storm Barbara.

Briliant memories and I cannot wait for us to become Kings of the Road again.
