Injury Update

Actually fed up of injuries, people can say “It’s just your luck” but I’m sorry this amount of injuries is not down to luck, there’s obviously something seriously wrong behind the scenes at training or in the physio’s room. Honestly can’t remember the last time we had a fully fit squad.

This - and the thrawn refusal to use younger players. The players are not only injured more often: they are also slower than their opponents. There doesn't seem to be any succession planning other than relying on signings.

What young players have we refused to use?

Given the marshmallow consistency of our midfield, McCarthy should be a regular starter. Sending Penrice out on loan when he would give the first team service seems (with the benefit of hindsight) to be short-sighted. Obviously, if you keep playing older players, they'll get injured more often.

IMHO the management team lacks a streak of ruthlessness, and it shows in selections in the short term (substitutions after the point at which they could change the game), in the way older players are retained and in the way younger ones that aren't going to make it are held on to without them even getting to the stage of playing for the first team. One more outing for Nisbet, for example, and it should be clear if he can make it or not; if not, let him go to find a level that suits him. Anything else is wrong for the club and wrong for him.

A competitive football club at the top flight cannot afford sentimental loyalty. Regarding longstanding/repeated injuries, I would hope that all involved with medical care and training have been made aware that their performance does not appear to be up to the standard the club requires.

Storey didn't look particularly slow for his winning goal a couple of weeks ago.

How many games did Azeez get? Stevenson? How many will Sammon get before he shows "if he can make it or not." It's asking a lot for a youngster with almost no full 1st team games under his belt to somehow show in his next "outing" whether he can make it or not.

Where you at the Dundee match? McCarthy struggled through the game and as Archie has said, he has a lot to learn about positioning and when to release the ball. You could argue that he should have been left in the side to learn but he picked up an injury for the next match against Hamilton. In my view, the best course of action would be to send him out on loan, however with us being so short of numbers that is not possible. This could change in January and I would think it’s the best course of action.

Penrice at the time of being sent out on loan was third choice left back/wingback behind Booth and Elliot. No manager could foresee losing both of your left sided options through injury. Penrice is now playing first-team football at top 4 side in the championship. It’s great experience for him and he will come back a better player for it.

The real problem here is that we have struggled in midfield with the loss of Abdul. Here lies the problem and a valid criticism of Archie is we should never been so weakened after the loss of just one player. The signing of Martin woods is a move to hopefully change this but you also have to wonder why Archie did not move quicker given the obvious problem we had.

Something we'll never know for certain when Penrice comes back is if he would be the same standard had he stayed and been thrown in at the deep end. As above post he was third choice left back and at time of going out on loan looking at getting little or no game time. We know he's been successful once again with his loan club. As in the summer friendlies he's been played out of position at Almondvale, which should by logic help his overall game.

If we did have the power to recall him from his loan spell we'd likely have been forced down that road. Not being able to may well be a blessing in disguise. Just one of these things we'll never know.

I suggest you contact the club immediately. Your medical and scientific knowledge is clearly way beyond that of anyone currently employed at Firhill.

There was a surprising mention of Doolan being given an icepack immediately after playing at Tynecastle, although he said he didn't feel any pain. Maybe there lies the answer to why the team's injuries seem so persistent. In some quarters, the claims for icepacks are being called into question. If there is no inflammation, there is no need for an icepack. If there is inflammation, one view is that the inflammation is the body's way of protecting itself and furthering healing.

"Because of the lack of research, we can’t conclusively prove whether or not icing is a useful therapy."
