^^ Ha, no trickery, Scot Symon indeed. A spectacular disaster of a Thistle manager who somehow managed to escape upstairs for a job, and still have everyone address him as "Mr Symon". They'd have his guts for garters these days!

Who was the last Thistle player to play in an FA Cup final?

Andy Wilkinson? Or are we not counting loan players, in which case no idea.

I don't really get the hang up that some folks have with loan players. If you played once for Thistle you were a Thistle player and that's that, I reckon. Andy Wilkinson in 2011...

Alan Hansen

Alan Hansen holds the joint-record for a Thistle player with 3 FA Cup final appearances. With which 1980s Jag does he share the record?

Ryan Stevenson

Connor Sammon

Miles Storey

A.N Other

Very good question. I can remember the Stevenson, Muirhead and Sammon goals very clearly, but the Storey goal is lost somewhere in the shifting sands of my memory.

Am I right in saying that it was for Inverness in the 1-2 cup tie at Firhill where we played with no forwards, leaving both Doolan & Taylor on the bench for the first half?

If not it might have been for Inverness in the unmemorable 4 goal post split defeat or possibly for Aberdeen in the 0-6 reverse (but I do not think so).

No doubt someone will enlighten me!

He scored at Pittodrie last season in the 2-1 game after Lindsay gifted him possession on the edge of our box.

You're also right to say he scored for Inverness in the 1-4 game although there's an argument that goal was a Ryan Scully OG.

I’m pretty sure he scored for Aberdeen when Lindsay had a complete brain fart. The game where Welsh talked himself into a red card.

^ Indeed, David Harvey, the answer to 101 Jaggy trivia questions. Our stop-gap goalie of '85 played for Leeds United in the finals of 1970 (the replay), 1972 and 1973.

Extremely difficult question...

Only 3 Thistle players have played in both the FA Cup and the Scottish Cup finals. Name them.

Alex forsyth?

The 3 Jags who played in both the FA Cup & Scottish Cup Finals

George Gillespie was an unusual, but well decorated, footballer who started out as a full back but soon became renowned as an outstanding goalkeeper. As a left-back he played for Rangers in the Cup final of 1877, and had settled as a 'keeper by the time of the final of 1879, although they lost out to Vale of Leven on both occasions. The latter was a walkover as Rangers refused to turn up for the replay, unhappy at the ref in game 1! George joined Queen's Park in 1884 and, initially, his run of bad luck continued. For 2 years in a row he played for the Spiders in FA Cup Finals of 1884 and 1885, both times losing out narrowly to Blackburn Rovers. Following the 1884 match, the referee admitted that at one point during the game the ball had passed the Blackburn goal line, but as Queen's Park did not attempt to claim the goal, it was not awarded, and a legitimate draw was therefore denied! Ultimately, George received 2 winners' medals with Queen's in the Scottish Cup, in 1886 and 1890. As a free-spirited amateur, George sometimes put himself around as a guest for other teams, and this he did for Thistle on at least 3 occasions between 1887 and 1893.

The 21-year-old Kenny Campbell kept goal for Liverpool in the FA Cup final of 1914, losing out 1-0 to Burnley before King George V at Crystal Palace. It was another George, the ever-bold George Easton, who tempted the internationalist to Firhill on the promise that he was building a side to rival the Rangers, and, with a fee of £1,750 paid to Liverpool in April, 1920, Kenny became our record signing. Just 1 year later, George lived up to his promise, and Kenny played his part with a clean-sheet, as Thistle defeated the Govan side 1 to nil in the Scottish Cup Final of 1921.

Super Maurice Johnston was red hot at Firhill, scoring 64 goals in 116 games between 1981 and 1983. Within 5 months of leaving Firhill, he was appearing for Watford in front of 100,000 in the 1984 FA Cup Final at Wembley, so who can blame him really? They lost 2-0 to Everton that day, but Mo didn't have to wait too long for a winners' medal in a national cup final; he apppeared as a Celt in the Scottish Cup final the very next year, helping them to a 2-1 win over Dundee United at Hampden Park. This was the perfect example of grabbing the opportunity while you can; it proved to be his second and last appearance in either of the two national cup finals in question.
