Out if interest, does any other club in Scotland have more than one consecutive relegation in its history? Particularly from top flight to third tier? I havn't been able to find any.

As I understand it (although happy to be corrected), we are alone in "achieving" this from the top division.

Only one of those teams is now an established Premiership team. Kind of illustrates the level we've been at in the past 3-4 decades; by no means a strong team.

To be fair, I don’t think people slag St Johnstone for their achievements but more for the way they played - much the same as the regular chant at Firhill used to be “boring boring County”

Indeed. Boring their way to success. Give me 'The Thistle Way' any day.

A number of fans said on this forum they would rather we got relegated than watch us play the way St.Johnstone do. Well how is that working out for them now ?

Not very well, I should imagine. I'd rather we played the St Johnstone way and avoided relegation. That said any permanence to that and I wouldn't be renewing my season ticket. Very similar to a situation if we installed a plastic pitch at Firhill. That's just my own viewpoint, others of course will see things differently.

Bring back the Committee?

TJR, would the Committee be approximately equivalent to today's board of directors or more akin to a grouping of enthusiastic and committed supporters?

If the latter, it shows that this forum could select and motivate the team much better than Gary Caldwell can.

We originally had a general committee that was responsible for all aspects of running the club and, through time, we ended up with a dedicated sub-committee responsible for team selection. Most of the committees in the early years featured a mixture of senior gentlemen (often upstanding members of the community with various business interests) as well as players, both retired and current. I think it'd be fair to say that they all seemed very committed, and we've a lot to thank our 19th century forefathers for; they were always fighting and winning battles in adversity and without their dedication Thistle would have died like so many hundreds of other clubs did in that era. One thing that recurs often in research is that the team captain had a big role to play in both team selection and in-play tactics, a trait which lasted well into the 1920s at least.

I've spared you the weekly misery for long enough, happy ******* New Year :(

:detective:

28.09.2018 Dunfermline Athletic [a] L0-1 (SPFL Championship - game 7)
A RECORD-EQUALLING NIGHT

  • Thistle's 8-year-old H2H record of 4 consecutive League clean-sheets at East End Park comes to an end.
  • For only the second time in history, Thistle have opened the away legs of a second tier campaign with 4 straight defeats. Ian McCall's Thistle were the only other side to do so, back in 2010-11.

06.10.2018 Ross County [h] L0-2 (SPFL Championship - game 8)
ALAN ARCHIBALD'S FINALE

  • Thistle lose a home League match in the second tier for the first time since December, 2012.
  • The 2 goal loss matches our record negative margin of defeat at home to the Dingwall side.
  • Thistle's poor record at home to County in the second tier continues; Jags have won only 3 of the 15 clashes.
  • Following 18 months of painful decline, manager Alan Archibald is sacked shortly after the game. At 5y, 8m, 6d, his tenure in the hotseat was the longest since Bertie Auld (6y, 4m, 17d) and the sixth longest of any Thistle manager in history. Before the game, he stood as second only to Jim McInally (Peterhead) as the longest serving manager in the SPFL.

13.10.2018 Dundee United [h] L1-2 (SPFL Championship - game 9)
AN UNEXPECTED RECORD FOR GERRY

  • Caretaker Gerry Britton manages Thistle almost 15 years after having last done so. His tenure gap (14y, 10m, 6d) takes over from Gerry Collins (13y, 2m, 22d) as the longest between managerial spells at Thistle.
  • Thistle and Dundee United meet in second tier action at Firhill for the first-time ever.
  • Jai Quitongo scores his only goal for Thistle.

20.10.2018 Alloa Athletic [a] L0-1 (SPFL Championship - game 10)
YET ANOTHER RECORD-MAKING DEFEAT FOR THE CLUB

  • Gary Caldwell becomes the 24th individual to take permanent charge of the Partick Thistle first team, and the tenth of that group to have been capped as a Scottish internationalist.
  • 23-year-old Souleymane Coulibaly makes his Thistle debut.
  • Thistle continue on their very strange run of 21 competitive games without a draw. You need to rewind back 65 years (season 1953-54) to find a longer sequence (25).
  • For the first time in history, Thistle lose a third consecutive game to Alloa Athletic, an ongoing run since 2006. This extends the H2H League record and sets a new record in the competitive games category.
  • For first time in history, Thistle lose a third consecutive game under three different managers. Some going, even by our standards!
  • For first time in history, Thistle have opened the away legs of a second tier campaign with 5 straight defeats.

27.10.2018 Ayr United [h] L0-1 (SPFL Championship - game 11)
FIRING BLANKS

  • For the first time in history Thistle fail to score in a third consecutive competitive match against Ayr United. It's the first time since 1982 that we've lost 3-in-a-row against the Honest Men.
  • One of the most joyless periods in Thistle's history continues; it's now SIXTY League games without back-2-back wins.

03.11.2018 Greenock Morton [a] L1-5 (SPFL Championship - game 12)
MISERABLE CLUB-RECORD EMPHATICALLY EXTENDED

  • Brice Ntambwe scores his first goal for Thistle.
  • 20-year-old Jack Storer plays his last game for Thistle.
  • After having went 5 unbeaten against 'Ton under Alan Archibald, Gary Caldwell's Thistle succumb to a thrashing against the Greenock men. It's our greatest margin of defeat against them since a 4-0 League reverse at Cappielow 28 years ago.
  • Thistle reset their new club-record of opening the away legs of a second tier campaign with straight defeats, now 6-in-a-row.

10.11.2018 Inverness Caledonian Thistle [h] L0-1 (SPFL Championship - game 13)
ANOTHER RECORD-MAKING LOSS

  • For the first time ever, Thistle go 4 without a win against Inverness CT, both in League and competitive action.

17.11.2018 Falkirk [a] D1-1 (SPFL Championship - game 14)
CRAZY DRAWLESS RUN ENDS

  • Craig Slater scores his first goal for Thistle.
  • Thistle's strange sequence of 24 competitive games without a draw (8th May 2018 to 10th November 2018) comes to an end, 3 shy of equalling the 120-year-old record of 27 games.
  • Jags go 9 League games without defeat vs. Bairns, 2011 to date. The H2H record (11) was set in 1921.

01.12.2018 Queen of the South [a] L0-1 (SPFL Championship - game 15)
DISASTROUS RUN CONTINUES

  • Since scoring 3 times in the first half against Queen's back in September, Thistle have scored just ONCE in the last nine first halves of football.
  • Thistle's great run of 8 Leagues games unbeaten against the Doonhamers comes to an end.
  • Gary Caldwell fails to win for the sixth consecutive time as Thistle manager. His 0.17 points-per-game ratio is the lowest ever recorded at this stage in competitive action across all first-spell managerial tenureships.
  • Similarly, Gary's 0.33 goal-per-game ratio (2 in 6) currently places him with the lowest figure of any Thistle manager in history, caretaker or otherwise. Jimmy Bone (0.67) is the leader in the clubhouse as a caretaker, whilst Gerry Collins (0.88) had the lowest gpg ratio of all the permanents.
  • Only once before have Thistle fans had to wait longer for their first away win of a second tier campaign; it was 13th time lucky for Benny Rooney's Thistle in 1984-85 who finally achieved a 4-0 victory at Glebe Park in January.

08.12.2018 Dunfermline Athletic [h] W2-0 (SPFL Championship - game 16)
4 GOALS AND 4 WINS FOR MILES

  • 19-year-old Dan Jefferies makes his debut, becoming just the third Welshman known to have played for Thistle.
  • Blair Spittal, currently on his personal-best appearance run for the club, hits the top of our competitive scorers chart with his 4th goal of the season.
  • Every time Miles Storey has scored for Thistle we've won, his run now standing at 4-in-a-row (2-1 v Dundee in Oct' 17; 1-0 v St Johnstone in Oct' 17, 2-0 v Albion Rovers in Jul' 18 and now 2-0 v Dunfermline in Dec' 18). More of this please!
  • Gary Caldwell wins his first game as Thistle manager at the 7th time of asking, jointly the third longest run of its kind for any Jags gaffer. With his winless opening run of 10 in 1986, Derek Johnstone still stands with the unwanted club-record.

15.12.2018 Alloa Athletic [h] D2-2 (SPFL Championship - game 17)
RARE PENALTY GOAL FOR DOOLAN

  • Kris Doolan scores his first penalty goal for Thistle in more than 7 years, bringing his conversion rate up to 71.4% (5 out of 7), all coming in League action.
  • With his 118th competitive goal for the club, Kris joins Jimmy Walker in joint 4th place in that particular all-time goalscorers chart.
  • Blair Spittal stays top of our 2018-19 competitive scorers chart with his 5th goal of the season.
  • Thistle are now 4 competitive games without a win versus Alloa, 2 shy of equalling the H2H record which was set in 1990.

22.12.2018 Ross County [a] L0-2 (SPFL Championship - game 18)
AWAY DAY WOES CONTINUE

  • 21-year-old Jai Quitongo plays his last game for Thistle.
  • Thistle go 10 second-tier away games without a win, a run which stretches from 2013 to date. It's the longest such run since the relegation season of 2004-05 (14) and 6 shy of the all-time club-record (17) set in 1990.

29.12.2018 Greenock Morton [h] L1-2 (SPFL Championship - game 19)
FAREWELL TO TAM

  • 30-year-old Tam Scobbie plays his last game for Thistle.
  • After 10 competitive games, Gary Caldwell sits with a ratio of 0.5 points-per-game. Of all the first-spell tenureships, only Derek Johnstone (0.3) in 1986 had a worse start.
  • After 10 competitive games, Gary Caldwell sits with a ratio of 0.7 goals-per-game. Of all the first-spell tenureships, only Derek Johnstone (0.6) in 1986 had a worse start.

05.01.2019 Dundee United [a] D1-1 (SPFL Championship - game 20)
4 MID-SEASON DEBUTANTS

  • 20-year-old Conor Hazard makes his Thistle debut.
  • 21-year-old Ally Roy makes his Thistle debut.
  • 27-year-old Steven Saunders makes his Thistle debut.
  • 31-year-old Joe Cardle makes his Thistle debut.
  • Kris Doolan scores his 5th competitive goal versus United. Only Alex O'Hara (6) has scored more often for Thistle versus the Tannadice men.
  • His 119th competitive goal places him as outright 4th in our all-time competitive scorers chart behind only George Smith, Willie Paul and Willie Sharp.
  • For the first time in history, Thistle will go into February still looking for their first away League win in a second-tier campaign.

12.01.2019 Falkirk [h] D1-1 (SPFL Championship - game 21)
ANOTHER UNWANTED RECORD

  • With his 6th goal of the season, Blair Spittal extends his lead to 2 at the top of our competitive goals chart for 2018-19. His goals/assists combi-total (10) is 4 ahead of his nearest team-mates (Erskine, Slater and Doolan), all of whom sit with 6.
  • Gary Harkins becomes the first Thistle player to be sent-off since Danny Devine received a red-card at Easter Road in March, 2018.
  • Thistle go 10 League games without defeat vs Falkirk (2011 to date), 1 away from equalling the H2H record (11) set in 1921.
  • By contrast, 1 second-tier win in 15 equals the woeful club-record which was set in 1989-90.
  • Thistle go SEVENTY games without back-to-back League wins, a run which, usually, occurs once in a blue-moon. Incredibly, it's the second such run in recent seasons following a similar fiasco (71) between 2013 and 2015. Prior to these, the only two other such runs were: 70 (1907-1910) and 77 (1912-1914). Four of the current crop have been involved in two of these horrendous runs; Chris Erskine, Christie Elliott, Kris Doolan and Stuart Bannigan.

ongoing sequences:

  • 10 competitive away games without a win, 25th Aug 2018 to date. (Longest run since: 10 games; 19th Aug 2017 to 27th Dec 2017. Club-record: 26 games; 28th Nov 1908 to 28th Aug 1909.)
  • 10 second-tier away games without a win to start off this season, 4th Aug 2018 to date. (Longest run since the club-record: 12 games; 11th Aug 1984 to 12th Jan 1985.)
  • 11 second-tier away games without a win, 4th May 2013 to date. (Longest run since: 14 games; 11th Sep 2004 to 9th Apr 2005. Club-record: 17 games; 16th Sep 1989 to 25th Aug 1990.)
  • 38 consecutive competitive appearances for Blair Spittal, 31st Mar 2018 to date, a new personal best for the player. (Longest run since: Adam Barton - 54 games; 28th Dec 2016 to 3rd Feb 2018. Club-record: Johnny Jackson - 313 games; 28th Aug 1926 to 25th Mar 1933.)
  • 70 games since back-to-back League wins, 11th Mar 2017 to date. (Longest run since: 71 games; 16th Apr 2013 to 14th Mar 2015. Club-record: 77 games; 2nd Nov 1912 to 5th Dec 1914.)

TJR. Have Chris Erskine and Gary Harkins ever played together on the pitch for Thistle? In Gary's latest incarnation, he has played one game in which Chris was an unused substitute, and of course in our last game Gary had departed the scene before Chris was introduced.

My recollection is that at the end of Gary's first incarnation, there was a fair amount of pre-season negotiation with Dundee which culminated in his departure. This was the same pre-season in which Chris arrived. I remember Chris scoring in a pre-season friendly against Liverpool (Archie's testimonial) by which time Gary had left, as when Gary came on at half-time of the testimonial to take part in the hit the crossbar competition, he was already a Dundee player. Thus I am fairly sure that they have not played together in a competitive fixture for Thistle. Was there an earlier friendly where both played?

Does Gary's sending off rule him out of the cup tie or the next league fixture? The combination of this and Chris' uncertain Thistle future could mean that once again they are ships that pass in the night (hopefully keeping a good look out for slowly turning tankers).

You're right, they've never played together for Thistle.

Gary bade his first-spell farewell on Saturday, 9th May, 2009, in a 4-0 defeat away to Dundee in the SFL First Division. He was offski before any of the pre-season games, Dundee's financial lure terminating his Firhill contract a year earlier than scheduled.

Chris made his debut on Saturday, 11th July, 2009, in a 1-1 friendly draw away to Stirling Albion.

Currently, there's a "same competition" rule in place, meaning Harkins will be available for the Stranraer game, his one match suspension kicking-in for the QOS game the following week.

Though, as stated, it's a repeat "of a similar fiasco (71) between 2013 and 2015", during which time we did stay up, and avoided a play-off.  Most of us correctly look at those seasons as successful.

I have no actual point here, other than it's a funny old game (etc., etc.)

Thanks TJR. So their two worlds might finally collide on Saturday,  though one may depart the fray as the other enters it.

I wonder if there's any full-time professional football team anywhere in the world with a worse record than that.
