Albion Rovers v Partick Thistle

Thought I would kick off the match thread for tomorrow night by recalling my first visit to Cliftonhill.

Early in the game Thistle were awarded a free kick, and an angry group of spectators next to me all bedecked in red and yellow began shouting at the referee. It did not make sense to me until I realised that there was no segregation and these were Albion Rovers fans.

I can also remember a Scottish Cup tie played in a gale so ferocious that any attempted vertical clearance would come flying straight back towards the goal area. Each side scored one wind assisted goal and amazingly towards the end we secured the win with a Danny Lennon daisycutter against the wind.

Enough of the history. Any thoughts on team selection and tactics for tomorrow?

A good early test to see if 'typical Thistle' still applies or if this reported new found enthusiasm is for real.  We really should win this easily....

Wonder if we will start again with what looked like a sort of 4-1-4-1 formation against Morton.  Looked like Slater sitting deeper until Gordon retreated to join him in the 2nd half.  I'd give Gordon a rest for this one even though it looked like he was having a rest during the Morton game, replace him with McCarthy since he looks like he could do with some game time.  Maybe Storey to come in for Doolan, or more likely for Spittal given Archie's preference of playing Miles on the wing.

My main recollection of the one match  I have attended at Cliftonhill, was the poor floodlighting.  Their light did not seem to reach the corner flags, and balls from corner kicks seemed to loom out of the darkness.  (Perhaps a slight exageration there) There was also a huge mound of soil just off the pitch towards one end.   I also seem to remember that the club kettle didn't work.

My one and only visit to Cliftonill nearly ended in disater. Think it was a evening cup game in the 70's.Had just received a company car,Ford Escort, and arrived in car park 5 minutes before kickoff. The three of us jumped out the car to get in the queue  and I managed to lock the doors whilst leaving the car keys in the ignition with the engine still running.Of course I didn't realise what I'd done until after we returned to the car to find a cop standing by the car.He was amazed I had never heard the tannoy  announcement given the crowd size .When he found out I didn't have a spare key he managed to open the door using a piece of wire he conjured up from some place.Think we won.

Last game I was at there was the drawn Cup game about 13 or 14 years back. Maybe  the  last time we played them in Coatbrig? That was back in the Campbell era and the first of 7 Scottish Cup games that season.

Heard the pitch is atrocious so I'd sacrifice a good performance for a winning one with nobody getting injured.

We won that match, the draw was at Firhill.

My first and only visit to Cliftonhill, but might go tomorrow.

Below is match report from my last visit (as mentioned above). What a farce with the wind and what a star I thought Robert Dunn was going to be. However one thing not in the match report is at half time a guy was hurrying with pies as they had run out with the 'surprising big Thistle support' and the guy was running with two trays of pies behind the goal. He tripped, like out of a comedy sketch and fell forwards. The bottom tray of pies stayed intact, the top tray went everywhere.  With style, he simply sprung up still holding the bottom tray and continued on his journey running to restock the catering hatch. (the things you remember!!)

Albion Rovers 1-2 Partick Thistle

A last gasp Danny Lennon strike sunk Albion Rovers at Cliftonhill.

Aided by a strong wind, Thistle took an early lead through Robert Dunn when he fired low past Mark McLean from a narrow angle in the sixth minute.

Rovers defended well for the remainder of the half and reached the break without further loss.

They pounded the visitors' goal after the interval and Tom Tait tested Kevin Budinauckas with two fierce drives.

Graham Duncan headed the equaliser four minutes from the end, but Lennon's late goal left them with nothing to show for a great second half performance.

Not worth opening a special thread, so will post this here on the theme of League Cup. Hearts "field" (yes, he actually played for 25 minutes-not an unused substitute) an ineligible player against Cove Rangers. They initially obtained 3 points for winning the match, but then had the book thrown at them by the SPFL. Our courageous football masters docked them 2 whole points, but credited them the 3 they already had. Net result, they broke the rules, albeit no doubt unintentionally, but still gained 1 point from the game. I presume that there are no points for Cove. Where is the justice in that?

Would the outcome have been the same if the transgressor had been Cove Rangers or even Partick Thistle?

I am sure in the past that wee teams have been thrown out of competitions for similar carelessness. I would not go that far, but a 3-0 win (both in goals and in points) to Cove seems about right to me.

Is this a Cover up?

The pie fall was a thing of beauty, the wind seemed to get under the poor guy.

Was that the game that Danny got booked for "crowd surfing"?

I've never seen us play Albion Rovers at Cliftonhill. I was at the @elevenone game though.

Bit of rain overnight might soften the pitch but I'm not expecting much in the way of fast flowing football.

Still, Rovers seem to have recruited their manager from the Juniors along with most of their new players supplemented with some Alloa youth players.

Should see a win for the Jolly Jags. Another 2-0 job.

If the bookies are doing goalscorer odds get on Big Tam O’Shanter for a goal. I’ve checked Hills, Bet365 and Mcbookie but no goalscorer odds yet.

Don't seem to offer odds if a league one or two team is involved in this competition.
