#9000 CHRIS ERSKINE

01.09.2018 Greenock Morton [h] W1-0 (SPFL Championship - game 4)
Chris Erskine (1-0, 50 mins)
3,431 @ Firhill
Going into this Firhill clash with 8,999 competitive goals behind them, the stage was set for one Thistle player to make some history, and with 7 of the previous 8 category landmark goals having contributed to victories, it was hoped that this run would continue. This was far from a given however, with a recently relegated Thistle having started the new season inconsistently. The pressure around the club was somewhat relieved 5 minutes into the second half; shooting towards the city end, some good work down the left resulted in a centre into the box which was met sweetly on the half-volley, 12 yards in front of goal, by Chris Erskine's left foot, the ball gloriously curving its way into the corner of the net. A thing of beauty, the strike was befitting of the 9000 competitive goal milestone, his easy, relaxed swing being all the more remarkable considering he was sandwiched in-between two blue and white hooped jerseys at the time. Clearly, you don't reach 56 competitive goals by chance! With his next goal for the club, Chris will overtake Maurice Johnston, Ronnie Glavin and Jim Melrose in our all-time competitive goals chart, and the fact that it was one of Thistle's key men of the 2010s era who registered as the ninth millenialist – with an actual match-winner – was as perfect as the goal itself.
