142 of them as I currently understand it. The list includes age if known, how many they scored on the day, followed by the summary match data. [disclaimer: some of the 19th century "debutants" may be falsely listed due to preceding teamlines being patchy]

They scored on their competitive debut for Thistle:

Excellent stuff as always TJR.

I remember Christie Elliott scoring within about 5 minutes of coming on v Hamilton, but my ageing memory has absolutely no recollection of Chris Turner at all.

How many games did he play?

Chris Turner scored a very good goal away against Livingston in a cup tie. Made it 2-0 for us after Marc Twaddle opened the scoring.

Yep, the only Jags goal for the Northern Irishman was on his debut. Played 6 games for us all-told, before heading back over the sea:

07.09.2008 Livingston [a] W2-0 (Challenge Cup Quarter Final)
13.09.2008 Clyde [a] D1-1 (SFL First Division - game 6)
24.09.2008 Rangers [h] L1-2 (League Cup 3rd Round)
12.10.2008 Airdrie United [h] L0-1 (Challenge Cup Semi Final)
29.11.2008 Stirling Albion [a] W3-2 (Scottish Cup 3rd Round)
13.12.2008 Airdrie United [h] W2-1 (SFL First Division - game 16)

Just trying to unpack my limited memories of Chris Turner for Barney's benefit.

Midfielder. Sean Welsh type build, so more of a link up player than a hard tackler.  Northern Irish under 21 cap or caps, so may have already played in same team as Jonny Tuffey. Came on as a substitute against Livingston and all I can remember about his goal was that it had a touch of class. I think he showed control and balance to take himself away from the defenders, and slotted in a very cool finish. For a short time we thought we had a potentially seriously good player on our hands. However, he could never seem to get himself match fit and just sort of faded away.

He almost wrote himself into our history books. You will see the League tie against Rangers mentioned above. Steven McKeown equalised Kris Boyd's opener. Turner came on as a substitute deep in the second half when Thistle were giving as good as they got at 1-1. Turner was within an inch of reaching a cross to slot it into an empty net with time running out. It was a bit like Euro 96 when Gazza just failed to connect with a cross at 1-1 v Germany.

The fine line between being a Jags legend and another also ran that Barney has forgotten!

Cracking stuff PTD!!

Thanks for that fine level of detail.

The game against Deadco I've tried hard to erase from the hard disk of my memory, because that was painful - we were brilliant that night, and Pedro ******* Mendes' outrageous strike in dead time denied us a penalty shoot-out that I was convinced we would win, because they were crapping it. I do remember that ball across the goal as well. Seems to be a familiar theme with us against Deadco and their tribute act unfortunately.

Steven McKeown was a very very good player for us at that time. Craig Slater reminds me of him, with a little more craft and a little less dig.

Do these really count?

Yes! In my opinion, Partick Thistle's rich and varied competition history lends itself best to no cherry-picking of the 46 tournaments played, 1878 to date, lest a dogs-dinner ensue.

You've picked out two for example, but haven't included small-time rubbish like the Glasgow & District Mid-Week League. And what about the Yoker Cup? It doesn't get much smaller than that, why aren't you asking to exclude either of these?

From time to time I don't mind running queries on a major competitive basis (to compare with other clubs for example) but it always pains to leave out our local cups when doing so, the Glasgow Cup, for example, being far from minor back in the day.

Superb list, but does the ARR Craib cup count as competitive?  at least Lawless scored in his competitive debut vs Falkirk, where Lyle Taylor scored for Falkirk, which gets me thinking.........

Do 2nd debuts count? According to wiki Lyle Taylor scored on his first game back of his 2nd loan vs ICT in a Scottish cup match!

Spot on there, ptdog. Just from my line of vision yon night I'd say it was even closer than the Gascoigne effort.

If memory serves me well Turner arrived at Firhill with some off the field baggage. Regardless of that he was the epitome of a player that was woefully short of pace/fitness tho' I seem to mind he could've been useful in attacking dead ball situations.
