i wasn't at the dumfy game so really can't comment on the game itself

however i was surprised that harkins was in the starting eleven and that fitzpatrick could only make the bench

but i want to go back to the ross county game

that first half performance against the league leaders was the best i had seen in a long time

fighting for every ball, slick passing, going in at half time 2 up , could have been more

second half-- caught cold

a lot of posters on here talking about mcmillan turning his back on the shot

for me the problem was down to spittal, unable to clear the ball and hazard far too slow in reacting to the situation

after that everything went t**ts up, nobody tackled, made a pass, lost possession

in other words confidence in the team evaporated

no matter what we think or say oor gary will be here until the end of season

so many things i could say about his selection however i give you one thing that really gets on my t**ts

now you know and i know that penrice went on loan to livi last season, and after a couple of games hopkins pushed penrice into midfield, and in that position he did so well that livi wanted to sign him

after 6 months he came back to us and archie promptly played him as a left back

now caldwell had done his homework on the thistle players fitness levels etc , "brilliant interview"

at one of gary's meet the manager , he made the comment that penrice was a fullback

penrice is not a full back gary, play him midfield , every game he plays you can see he wants to push forward

all is not lost yet!   we do have the players, and we do have the time to turn this round (hopefully)

there i feel a wee bit better now :thumbsup2:

Think he also said Penrice would never play midfield which was a stupid thing to say , at our level you need some players to be able to play more than one position .

The problem is you then put a full back on the wrong side.   Also, Penrice is very similar to Slater and Banzo.

I would not be surprised to see him in midfield in the future though.

i don't think penrice is the same type of player to banzo or slater

imo he is more aggressive ,wants to push forward, draw defenders to him and make a pass or have a pop at goal

you can see that in his game when he does push forward

i think he should be given a chance in midfield

remember last season when at livi he was  playing against most of the same teams that are in this division this season

Perhaps Penrice should have taken Banzo’s position but I don’t think we have another LB. Elliot’s been one of our better performers since New Year so wouldn’t move him.

McMillan hardly deserves a place at all so it’s tricky to move Penrice.

The performances of Slater, Spittal, Doolan, McDonald, McMillan and Fitzpatrick were diabolical. Some of these have played well recently but it’s unacceptable to suddenly be garbage again.

The rest were just bad, possibly Penrice excepted. It was too far away to apportion blame but there’s a serious problem at the back if a diddy like Devine can have 3 free headers.

God knows what team he’ll play vs Hearts. Possibly give Mansell a chance as he can’t do worse than Doolan.

If Bannigan is still injured , I’d play Sean Mcginty at left back where he’s played before and put Penrice into a holding midfield role .

Bannigan and Slater are very different to each other so I’m not sure how Penrice can be similar to them both?

Penrice will never be a top level full back because he’s far too slow, and whenever he’s played in midfield he’s looked decent. McMillan or Elliott could play left back, so in the purposes of getting Gary Harkins out the team I’d be all for it.

I don't think they are and I am surprised anybody would say that.

If Banzo and Slater are very different then what would be the difference in say McCarthy and Banzo and Slater?

There’s a big difference between them all. McCarthy is hard running and tackling but can barely pass and shows no attacking threat, Bennigan is a more defensively minded passing specialist, and Slater is an attacking minded player who is good with the ball at his feet. All very different.

Penrice is the best left back that we have got.  He may have a future in midfield, but for now, he is our left back.

As others have said, there are options to replace Harkins, Gordon getting fit is the obvious one. However as you have said, Caldwell is here to the end of the season, and Harkins is Caldwells man.

Agree with this.

But debating who is best to replace Harkins depends on what formation is played and what position you are filling if removing Harkins.

Harkins has played in front of back four, out wide and sitting behind forwards. All entirely different roles.

That said his last 3 performances have been so poor anyone would an improvement!

But he was a stand out his first two games in front of the back two. Ask him to go further forward and to run about chasing down opposition players and, well, he just can't. Have him in a holding role and he runs it. He never panics on the ball and rarely loses it and is a reliable distributer of the ball.......unless he is knackered like 2nd half of RC game. He ran the first half, him and bannigan. As soon as he ran out of puff he drifted out of the game. I think there is a role for him but agree he should have way more stamina.
