“The advice” is not to leave it until the last minute of when the contract expires before saying so. To “not beat about the bush” would have been to tell Doolan he was free to find another club as soon as Caldwell had concluded he was not going to offer him any contract extension.

In the manner of the delivery of the decision, and the subsequent explanations offered by the manager, they “beat around the bush”, “came to the point late” and obfuscated rather than “clearly articulated” why the decision was taken.
