The U15s have won the Rey Cup beating KA (not Kenny Arthur I hope) 2-0 in the final - well done guys!

The youngsters have lead the way now lets hope the first team can do the same this season.

Who knows the way things are going we soon might be able to put out a team of Over30s. Just gotta find a seniors league to play in.:)

To be fair most clubs are the same. And we did give contracts to 3 this season

Not sure that’s strictly true TB , think Hamilton gave out 7 or 8 professional contracts , starting from the 16s upwards , the way our Academy seems to work , we seem to only offer professional contracts when our youths have to join the paid professional ranks .

IMO there isn’t enough focus on the Academy which should be our future and unfortunately GC only seems to be interested in the first team .

What brings you to that conclusion?

Just with Caldwell’s lack of interest in watching the games, even interacting with the youth  players , good example last week at Hamilton, their youth players were all about the game against us  , selling programmes , doing the cones for the warm up , all under the watchful eye of one of the coaches .   I picked my nephew up after the game after they had tidied up the dressing room at 6.30 .      They seem to all be in it together, mixing with the first team , Brian Rice is totally involved with the Academy upwards working with Dougie Imrie   .   Just my opinion but it gives the youngsters an idea what it takes to become a professional football player , I think we’re a million miles away from that .

Yes, despite sales of Lindsay and Fitzpatrick, we don't seem to have a fully developed youth policy and promising players seems to fall by the wayside.  Can't expect big money sales all the time but a few good  young players becoming squad regulars and progressing to fixtures in the team would be good.  Penrice is the only one who's made it really since Bannigan (9 years ago!!).  Others got brief cameos and then disappeared.  Hopefully Wilson and/or Gallasso get some decent game time this season.

Forgot to add: the youth policy isn't meant to depend on Weir's beneficence for ever, it's got to become self financing which means a decent (not necessarily spectacular) sale every other season is essential.

We seem to like to develop other teams youth players like Cammy Palmer , he might turn out to be a good player but what kind of signals does that send out to Calum Wilson , same last season with Conor Hazard when I personally thought Jamie Sneddon was the better keeper .

Thanks for the info jls. Is there a difference between the contract you mention that Hamilton have given out and one where the player goes full time? Do you mean there's a difference when the player is 16 to 18 but isn't on a full time contract and if so what sort of wage do they get?

I do agree we need to be better to give long term benefit to the club. Fingers crossed we might be going in the right direction given the updates from Fawlty Towers.

No the players that are given professional contracts are full time , got to report at 8.30 in the morning, don’t think they get paid a lot of money in effect probably like an apprenticeship in any other job .

From the Foyle Cup website:Another great advertisement for Foyle Cup football in the U16 category served up by Partick Thistle and Maiden City Soccer at Brandywell on Saturday saw the local side just pipped at the post by a slick and fast moving Scottish team whose ability to keep possession was a pleasure to watch. U16 won 2-1.
