I agree with you in the context of your original argument.

However across the board, I do find the "at least we aren't the Old Firm" trope a tiring one. Thistle have become such a cultureless club in my opinion (sorry), so a Jags fan saying the prevailing culture of Thistle is that we are not the Old Firm is equivalent to a Scottish person saying their culture is based on the fact they aren't English. Club culture can't be based on what you aren't, only what you are. The general behaviour of OF fans, along with the glory hunting and sectarian bile I find sickening. However I'm not against trying to emulate their domestic success, nor get fans through the gate. Ultimately that's what a football team should be. I get the general impression at times that success is a second thought, as long as we aren't anything like the OF.

Cracking post, Y & R. Not entirely sure if I agree or not but definitely thought provoking. I'm a Jags fan by location. If I'd been brought up elsewhere in Glasgow I could just as easily have been a Third Lanark or even I suppose a Clyde fan. My father, who was originally from Perth and a St J supporter, was simply anti OF and thus directed me away from the evil side. I suppose a lot of that has rubbed off on me but I can readily understand why others feel differently. Your point highlighted is difficult to argue against even if I don't toe that line.

How many seats have we smashed at parkhead compared to what they’ve broken at Firhill. Even per head count it massively out ways our supporters behavior.

Having more numbers does not allow for mob rule, but as the club and the press accept (And bow down to) the sectarian pound we say and do nothing, in fact the only statement we make is when their fans complained

Norge, I was talking about Raith fans the other night. Plays into the hands of OF apologists who claim on a proportional basis they're no worse than others.

My point was more that the Raith incident made almost every daily paper, yet the damage done to most grounds at each visit of the Green Brigade and UB is ignored

Worse than that- it is actively encouraged with the old firm. Here is an extract  from the quite frankly unbelievable report from the Record on the riot at the under-17 OF game at Firhill a few years ago (when Zombie Rangers were in the lower leagues):

"Forget any other derby in British football. In fact, scrub any other city rivalry in Europe. No other clubs could produce the kind of atmosphere witnessed in Maryhill last night.

And it reminded everyone in Scottish football just what we have been missing. Yes, the unsavoury elements of the Rangers v Celtic clash were again here for everyone to see.

At times it was intimidating and shamefully this was no place for youngsters coming to watch their team in a ‘friendly’ environment.

The loutish behaviour and sectarian undercurrent hasn’t gone away in the last year. But in a domestic campaign which has failed to get out of second gear, this was a sharp reminder of why the Old Firm have to be the driving force behind our game."

I'm really interested in some of the posts here as this has been a sticking point with me for a long time.

Although we have always had the bumper tag-line "Glasgow's Alternative," what is to stop Queens Park, Pollock, Maryhill, etc. being Glasgow's alternative? With their illustrious history, amazing youth academy, and well financed model, we are in real danger of becoming Glasgow's 4th team  behind a full-time Queens Park in a few seasons (if we don't arrest the slide). So my point is, by saying we are Glasgow's alternative club, we are once again just basing our entire club on what we aren't (the OF) as opposed to what we are. And I find the wishy-washy labels like "family friendly" or "inclusive" being applied to about 95% of Scottish teams; I don't think that's what drives people to really support a football team. Ask most fans why they support a club and they'll tell you it's because of where they grew up, or it was who their mum/dad/whoever supported. Maybe we are an exception to that rule; I don't know. Just interesting.

Interesting point you make regarding the 'Glasgow alternatives', what with QP becoming a professional set-up and the possibility / probability that Pollok Juniors will, along with many other Junior teams, joining the Scottish Football Senior Pyramid [initially at tier 6] My guess is this could have a serious impact on the possibilities PTFC have to increase their fanbase. Possibly another item on the agenda for the 'Working Group' guys for their 'long term forecast' regarding the various income streams?

Most people would call it a poisonous, bigoted hate filled atmosphere.
