The Old Firm

Nothing will change until both clubs accept responsibility and stop allowing their grounds to be turned into Loyalist and Republican theme parks.

No more Rule Britania, no more Irish tri-colour card displays. I am well aware that there is nothing sectarian about that song or that flag, but there can be no doubt that by allowing such things to take place within the ground, they are actively encouraging the morons to engage in more serious and sinister behaviour, such as singing songs relating to paramilitary groups and hurling vile and bigoted abuse.

Sadly, these cretins are far too ignorant and stupid to understand the extent of the misery and dispair caused by their actions.

Martin Bain and Peter Lawell are just as bad as the perpetrators with their "deflect and deny" approach. Of course the clubs can be held responsible for some of our society's problems. It's time the clubs stopped profiting from the hatred and done something positive, but I won't hold my breath.

There is no hope for the cancer that is the Old Firm.

"Old Firm unite over anti-bigotry plan after summit"

Will this change anything? Make your own minds up.

'Old Firm unite'... they say that as if it is something special and new. They are two cheeks of the same shitty ********* and all this pish and posturing we're hearing will change absolutely nothing. All the nonsense was about yesterday was so Salmond could get his slimy little puss into a few photies and newsbites.

The fact the OF had their own little get together the night before to get their stories straight and formulate their stance on all of this says it all.

It's never nice to make capital out of someone else's misfortune (or as noted philanthropists and banking family the Rothschilds put it 'the time to make money is when there's blood running in the streets') but surely there's a good marketing opportunity for Thistle in all the high profile high minded sentiment that's being spouted around the recent antics of the Ugly Sisters. How about an advertising campaign for Thistle showing film and photos of the kind of assholery that accompanies Old Firm games, to a soundtrack of those lovely Old Firm 'folk' songs that ends up with Willie Kinniburgh intoning 'If you don't want your kids or their friends involved in this sort of p*sh, get them along to Firhill. Kids go free.' Just a thought.

Agreed, we should go for the subliminal, subtle approach.

:D

I posted something similar on another thread. Last week's moronathon could potentially be a real boon for Thistle, as well as other small clubs, in terms of attracting new fans. The thickos will stay away because they won't be able to see that there is anything wrong with all the bigoted pish that gets spouted at Ibrox and Parkhead.

i think an advertising strategy to respond to this so called crisis of the old firm would backfire and would be seen as a cynical exploitation of deep seated cultural problems in our society. It's business as usual in scottish football, the attachment of our society to the old firm runs too deep. Consequently this will work in their interests as they will be seen to be taking action on a problem that runs deeply in society. A big part of celtics sucessfull rebranding was built on the moral panic following their fan getting murdered that fateful day we beat em at parkhead.

Ultimately, there is no way for a team like us to rise above the morass and become a bigger club marketed as some alternative. Scottish football is dieing, the old firm will end up with about 17000 fans at their ground in ten years time whilst the rest of us will be lucky to have 800. The premiership is just that good..

Unfortunately, I think you've hit the nail on the head and since I fear that we are not in for a Cultural Revolution, in these parts; anytime soon I can't add any little pithy witticism that makes us all feel good.

Sorry but does anybody else think Lawell and Bain's dribblings were anything other that pathetic. So its all down to society and the the social problems of the country in general. In what way exactly are the actions of Lennon and McCoist related to this? The 3 red cards were due to poverty in the East End? These are very poor excuses and for Rangers and Celtic to wring their hands and say there is nothing more that they can do is pathetic. While I understand that Neil Lennon cannot enjoy the intimidation he has to endure, he would be well advised to look at his own behaviour!

As long as the Scottish Football Authorities continue to run scared of these two, nothing will change. Action should have been taken years ago!

Actually they are right - but the OF are part of our society and its bigotry. And it's clear they've been exploiting the worst prejudices for decades with the aim of making money. It's arguable that without the OF giving a focus for bigotry that we would be much further forward in this country with getting rid of it.

And the flipside of that is that they'll only seriously address the problem when it is made financially punitive for them not to.

It'll be a pity if the taxman wipes out Rangers before we get this all resolved...

Introduce tough new measures to cut alcohol consumption before and after games.

Laughable from 2 clubs that have a beer company on their shirts. That just about sums it all up, they are not interested in doing anything, bigotry is a cash cow.

Their millionaire owners cosy up to each other behind the scenes (joint sponsorship deals, carving up the TV money etc) and let the poor, uneducated and scum that follow them wallow in the bigotry.
