Zatafact? 141 Seasons Of The Indomitable P T F C

Recommended Posts

When was the last time there were two Thistles in the top flight? (Obviously us and ICT this year, and they leapfrogged us last relegation.)

IIRC Ferranti were in the SPL with us in 2002/3 but that probably does not count.

Re: The 5 games from the abandoned 1939-40 SFL season and, for that matter, the 7 subsequent Western League / Southern League seasons. A bit of a statsman's dilemma... damned if they do and damned if they don't include them...

On the issue, acknowledged football historian and writer, David Ross has this to say: "I have not included games played in 1939-40 to 1945-46 as these are not regarded as official by the Scottish League."

http://www.scottishl....net/author.htm

The all-time Top Tier table at statto.com shows Thistle in 10th position with 997 wins...

http://www.statto.co...time-table/full

I think I'll adopt a double celebration position with an unofficial post-United toast and an official post-Hearts toast... if all goes to plan :drink:

My argument would be that while season stats should be abandoned, we won the games and they should stand individually. Two celebrations it is then!

Never been two Thistles in the top flight.

Aberdeen FC, as it is today, didnt exist until 1903. And Dundee United were Wanderers,Hibernian, then United! Aren't United, technically a NEW club since then?

Garscube,

Thanks a million for pointing that out - a complete oversight on my part. This was my source list:

http://en.wikipedia....ums_in_Scotland

I totally missed the point that the stadiums weren't necessarily opened for the existing tennants/owners. That'll learn me.

I've now amended post #67 to reflect the originally intended point i.e. how we compare to our SPFL peers. Job's now a good 'un thanks to yerself.

There were three anomalies as a result:

Tannadice Park

Opened 1883 as Clepington Park, was home to Dundee East End, Dundee Violet, Dundee F.C., Johnstone Wanderers, Dundee Wanderers. Renamed as Tannadice Park for the new club, Dundee Hibernian, which was formed in 1909. I think everyone's in agreement that Dundee Hibernian and Dundee United are one and the same - the name change in 1923 was merely a re-branding and not a Rangers style liquidation.

Somerset Park

Opened 1888, home to Ayr FC until 1910. Home of Ayr United since they were founded in 1910.

Good factoid find while we're at it:

Ayr United are the only Scottish Football League club to have been formed from a merger of two existing senior league clubs, Ayr FC and Ayr Parkhouse.

And check the colours of Ayr FC - I'm glad they went kaput!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayr_FC.

(edited to add dunno why that link doesn't work but the wiki page shows red and yellow hoops, white shorts and red socks)

Pittodrie Stadium

Opened 1899. Pittodrie’s original tenants were the original Aberdeen club, a precursor to Aberdeen FC, which along with other local clubs Victoria United and Orion amalgamated on 18 April 1903.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to stand in the corner for an hour with my head bowed low

Most goals by a team in a single Scottish League match

15 goals

01.12.1894 - Airdrieonians 15 Dundee Wanderers 1

13 goals

10.03.1894 - Partick Thistle 13 Glasgow Thistle 1

11.12.1937 - East Fife 13 Edinburgh City 2

12 goals

02.01.1930 - King's Park 12 Forfar Athletic 2

13.04.1936 - Dundee United 12 East Stirlingshire 1

23.01.1954 - Motherwell 12 Dundee United 1

Notes:

  • Our record League score as above was achieved in our very first League Season, 1893-94.
  • Our 13-1 victory at Inchview was a League record at the time, both in terms of goals scored and in margin of victory.
  • Our record lasted only 9 months, when Airdrieonians blasted 15 passed Dundee Wanderers. For their cheek, the men from Lanarkshire were duly defeated in their very next game - 3-2 by the Jags at Inchview!
  • To this day, Thistle's 13-1 victory has remained intact as the 2nd greatest Scottish League score of all-time, in terms of margin.
  • Glasgow Thistle (also known as Thistle FC) were statistically the worst team ever to compete in the Scottish Football League, amassing only 7 points in their one and only season.

The Battle of the Thistle's

Since the inception of Scottish League football in 1890-91, four Thistle's have featured at Senior Level:

Partick Thistle (1893-94 to date)

Glasgow Thistle (1893-94)

Meadowbank Thistle (1974-75 to 1994-95)

Inverness Caledonian Thistle (1994-95 to date)

Notes:

  • In one bloody pesky season, 1994-95, there were 3 on the go at the same time.

Our League games head to head records:

vs. Glasgow Thistle (2-0-0, 17-4)

vs. Meadowbank Thistle (10-7-6, 33-26)

vs. Inverness Caledonian Thistle (6-0-6, 19-19)

Notes:

  • I am delighted to report that we clearly saw off the challenges from the Glasgow and Edinburgh Thistles. :)
  • Technically, Meadowbank's record should be joined with Livingston's since they were renamed and not liquidated. But I'm a punk. So I didn't.
  • I am distraught to learn that we are merely all square with the Highland imposters. :(
  • The inaugural Top Flight Battle of The Thistles is scheduled for October 19th at Caledonian Stadium.

"We are Thistle, we are Thistle, we are"... :fan: and fine well they all ken... :thumbsup2:

There has been 3 senior sides called 'Thistle', one from Edinburgh (1874-1900), Lochmaben (1899-1896) and the Glasgow side (1868 till disbanded on the 14th June 1894).

There was also a senior ' Thistle Athletic' from Milingavie who played in Red n Yellow hoops with navy shorts !!

^ Thistle Athletic? That's nearly as stupid as Caledonian Thistle...

The depressing state of the Scottish title race

  • After 116 campaigns, only 9 clubs outside of the OF have ever been Scottish champions... Aberdeen, Heart of Midlothian, Hibernian, Dumbarton, Dundee, Dundee United, Kilmarnock, Motherwell and Third Lanark.
  • Third Lanark's title success in 1903-04 set the bar for Partick Thistle in Glasgow. We're still trying to make the jump.
  • Thistle's greatest effort came in season 1930-31 when we finished 7 points adrift. (more on that later...)
  • Only one of the competing clubs in the new Scottish Premiership has been champions in the past 28 League seasons.
  • In terms of alternative champions to the OF, we are now officially experiencing the longest drought in all-time Scottish Football League history. 1984-85 was a long time ago. Thatcher was PM, Reagan was President.
  • The three-in-a-row sequence of Dundee Utd (1982-83) and Aberdeen (1983-84, 1984-85) was the all-time longest run without a title win for Celtic and Old Rangers. If Hearts hadn’t thrown it all away in the last seven minutes on the last day of the 1985-86 season it would have been four in a row. The Premier League looked quite promising at that time. No-one outside the OF has won it since.
  • Despite the fact that Old Rangers went defunct, Celtic’s winning points total (79) was the Division’s lowest in 14 years. Still, no-one could make a challenge.
  • Last season, Motherwell were 16 points off the pace – the closest a club outside of the OF has got to the flag since Hearts in 1997-98, who were 7 points behind.
  • Despite becoming Champions with relative ease, Celtic lost to more than half of their League opponents last season. Yet still, no serious challenge was made.

Time for another review from Henry McLeish methinks...

23.11.1901 3-1 vs Hamilton Academical

07.12.1901 1-0 vs Leith Athletic

21.12.1901 4-1 vs Motherwell

Notes:

  • A stunning run, which stretched over 3 seasons (or 6 seasons if you consider we were thrice in the top tier in between) and fully included our 1 and only whole season where we were unbeaten at home, 1899-00.
  • The run ended on the 4th January 1902 in a table top clash at home to Port Glasgow Athletic, with a crushing 2-1 defeat for the Jags. All was not lost however as we would still finish the season 2nd, and were duly elected to the 1st Division.
  • Our run is only bettered in all Scottish League history by Celtic's 26 1st Tier Home Wins In a row, 03.11.2002 to 29.02.2004.

Niall Kennedy has worked some wonders to find / create 2nd tier match reports of the era - Top Tier / OF press bias was rampant even back then. Here's some insight into how this great run came to an end:

"The biggest crowd of the season so far greeted Port Glasgow Athletic at Meadowside in early January. The Port were at full strength, but Thistle were missing Andy Wilson who had been involved in an accident at work. Thistle’s bare-bones squad had no full back cover and the absence disorganised the Thistle team. James Lamont, the most effective centre forward of the season, dropped back to take Wilson’s place. Alex Morton, newly signed from Cambuslang Rangers, played at inside left and William Reid played at centre forward. Thistle won the toss and played with the strong wind coming down the Clyde, dominating the first half. However, it was the away team that opened the scoring before Reid and Massie combined for Reid to equalise.

In the second half the lineup changed. Lamont went to centre forward, James Gailey to left back and Reid to centre half. Port Glasgow played well with wind and scored again. Further changes showed that Thistle were struggling in this important game. Reid now moved to left back and Gailey went back to centre half but to no avail. Port Glasgow deserved the win and would have scored more but for Willie Howden in goals. “This win gives Port Glasgow Athletic a comfortable lead and almost assures the championship,” reported the Daily Record."

When was the decision made that the home team kept all the gate receipts - a huge benefit to the (former) old firm?

My guess would be around 1985-86.

I think it was that combined with Bosman. This meant that player contracts tended to run for much shorter periods and the big clubs found it even easier to pluck the best from the smaller clubs sometimes for a lot less money than they'd have to in the old days as the clock ran down to the end of a contract.

Another problem was the false dawn of TV money which made the likes of Aberdeen, Hearts etc. sign expensive players on the assumption the money would always be there at the same levels and got burned when it turned out it wouldn't be). Partly also in an attempt to keep up with the OF - especially at that time Rangers. Now we know a lot of it was our money they were spending not their own but it helped damage Scottish football.

Most League games without defeat (and how the run was broken)

27 games

21.11.70 to 18.09.71 (25.09.1971 Morton [a] 0-2)

18 games

26.08.00 to 13.02.01 (17.02.2001 Stenhousemuir [a] 0-2)

19.01.13 to ?

15 games

29.09.62 to 02.03.63 (09.03.1963 Queen of the South [h] 0-1)

15.11.75 to 28.02.76 (04.09.1976 Ayr United [h] 0-2)

Notes:

  • Our greatest run of 27 games stretched over 2 seasons and included a fine 3-2 victory against Old Rangers at Firhill on 4th September 1971.
  • Archie can set another milestone should he manage to avoid defeat against Dundee United on Friday night. He will have guided Thistle to their outright 2nd longest unbeaten run of all-time.
  • The 15 game unbeaten run in season 1962-63 stands as our best ever run to be solely achieved in the top League.
  • At the peak of that run (see table for 6th March 1963) we were neck and neck with Rangers at the top, each club with 31 points. In typical Thistle fashion, we undid all of our hard work with a shock 1-0 defeat at home to Queen of the South 3 days later...

Most League games without a win (and how we broke the run)

26 games

28.11.1908 to 02.10.1909 (16.10.1909 Airdrieonians [a] 3-1)

14 games

09.08.2003 to 29.11.2003 (07.12.2003 Motherwell [h] 1-0)

13 games

03.09.1969 to 22.11.1969 (29.11.1969 Airdrieonians [a] 3-2)

Notes:

  • Our worst ever League run stretched over 2 seasons including, yes, you've guessed it, that "Ibrox season" again - 1908-09. Ouch.
  • Somewhat ominously, our 2nd worst League stretch occured during our last top flight spell, 2003-04.
  • The miserable 14 game run of 2003-04 (which saw us gather just 2 points) was the actual first 14 games of the season. We were effectively relegated by November.
  • At the end of November 2003, Thistle stood alone as the only team in British senior football without a league win.
  • In December 2003, just seven days after the club sacked Gerry Collins, the caretaker duo of Derek Whyte and Gerry Britton broke the run at the first time of asking with a victory at home to Motherwell. Laugh? We nearly did...

Most Consecutive League wins (and how the run was broken)

12 wins in a row

01.10.1932 to 26.12.1932 (31.12.1932 St Johnstone [h] 2-2)

10 wins in a row

06.10.1962 to 08.12.1962 (15.12.1962 Aberdeen [a] 1-1)

9 wins in a row

23.01.1897 to 04.09.1897 (11.09.1897 St Mirren [a] 0-1)

8 wins in a row

15.10.1904 to 10.12.1904 (17.12.1904 Celtic [a] 2-2)

19.02.2013 to 30.03.2013 (02.04.2013 Raith Rovers [a] 0-0)

Notes:

  • Thistle fans of 1932 vintage must have tearing their hair out. Our first 8 League games of the season produced a 2-1 victory at Parkhead - and 7 defeats! The next 12 games produced 12 straight League wins - our all-time record! You really couldn't make it up...
  • Christmas 1962 was a merry one for Jags fans - our 10 wins on the bounce had us right in amongst it as genuine title contenders going in to the New Year.
  • One thing that has become very apparent in looking back over the old records is the regular appearance of season 2013-14 in the all-time positive stats. The class of 2013 strikes again.
  • The 8 game winning League run of Alan Archibald's Thistle in 2013 was the greatest of any Thistle manager in over 50 years - the best since Willie Thornton back in 1962 in fact. Not bad for a rookie!

Most Consecutive League Defeats (and how we broke the run)

12 losses in a row

27.02.1909 to 25.08.1909 (28.08.1909 Motherwell [a] 2-2)

11 losses in a row

03.01.1898 to 15.10.1898 (22.10.1898 St Bernard's [a] 3-2)

10 losses in a row

13.09.2003 to 29.11.2003 (07.12.2003 Motherwell [h] 1-0)

Notes:

  • OMG. All of these 1908-09 stats are making me ill.
  • The 10 game losing run of 2003-04 was preceded by a 2-2 draw away to Motherwell and broken by 1-0 win at home to... Motherwell. Couldn't we just have played them every week?

Best start to a League season (and how the run was broken)

7 straight wins

20.08.1983 to 28.09.1983 (01.10.1983 Brechin City [a] 0-2)

6 straight wins

11.08.2012 to 22.09.2012 (29.09.2012 Raith Rovers [a] 1-1)

Notes:

  • Peter Cormack's Jags looked a cert to return to the Premier League at the second time of asking in '83-'84. We got off to our all-time greatest start and sat top virtually all the way to mid March. Inexplicably, we completely bottled it in the final stretch and went on a dreadful run of 8 games without a win. Morton and Dumbarton leapfrogged us and took the two promotion places.
  • The class of 2012-13 strike again in the all-time stats, with 6 League wins in a row out of the blocks. Being thwarted by Raith Rovers was a common occurrence last term – despite our dominant League form we only managed to beat them once in four attempts.

Worst start to a League season (and how we broke the run)

8 straight defeats

20.08.1898 to 15.10.1898 (22.10.1898 St Bernard's [a] 3-2)

5 straight defeats

29.08.1981 to 26.09.1981 (03.10.1981 St Mirren [h] 1-1)

Notes:

  • In the old First Division of 1898-99 we started with 8 straight defeats - and didn’t improve much. We finished the season with a miserable 6 points from 18 games - our lowest points total ever. Statistically, (as % of points gathered) it was our second worst League season of all-time.
  • Peter Cormack's first full season as boss got off to the worst possible start with 5 straight defeats - and it never really got much better from there. We could only muster up 6 wins in 36 games (2 of which were against Rangers), finished 2nd bottom and were relegated. Ironically, it would be Cormack who would guide Thistle to their all-time greatest start 2 seasons later with 7 straight wins.
  • Although it's not in the list, it's worth noting that in season 1932-33 we lost 7 of our first 8. The 1 victory? At Parkhead as we beat Celtic 2-1. Casually, we proceeded to win the next 12 League games in a row - our all-time record League run. The great unpredictables strike again!

It wasn't really inexplicable. We sold MoJo during that season. The impact was pretty catostrophic.

In the 15 games before his transfer we won 10 in the 24 after we won 8!

^ Good point thisal, and those stats certainly back it up ( although we won 19 out of 39 ;) ). Catastrophic indeed. I actually do remember having a teenage moan at the time along the lines of "tut... how could we no jist keep um til the end of the season"?

In today's fun-filled episode I look back at some of the greatest Thistle efforts in the Top Flight... :happy2:

Thistle's closest assaults on Scotland's League summit

1930-31 • 7 pts

1953-54 • 8 pts

1910-11 • 10 pts

1911-12 • 11 pts

1946-47 • 11 pts

1962-63 • 11 pts

1947-48 • 12 pts

1979-80 • 12 pts

notes:

  • In season 1930-31 Jags were tantalisingly close to the Scottish flag... a victory home and away to Rangers and a victory away to Celtic would have clinched the title!
  • In season 1946-47 Jags sat top after the games on 22.11.1947. Date wise, this is the deepest point into a season where we've sat outright top at Scottish football's summit.
  • In season 1962-63 Willie Thornton's Jags went on a 15 game unbeaten run that stretched all the way from September 1962 to March 1963. For 4 months we were nip and tuck with Old Rangers and on the 6th March 1963 we were sat level with them at the top on 31 points, 2nd only on GA. In true Thistle tradition we undid all of our hard work with a shock 1-0 defeat at home to Queen of the South on the 9th March 1963. Momentum was lost from thereon. Apparently, the Thistle players hadn't fully thawed out from Scotland's deep freeze...
  • In season 1979-80 (Bertie Auld's last full season) only 12 pts separated the Top 7 in what was a highly cut throat Premier League season.

I have taken the liberty of recollecting a memorable post from one of my favourite threads on here, "Your First Thistle Game". Hope you don't mind Mr. Winter - what a first game!

December 1962 - Thistle 3 (Hogan, Whitelaw, Hainey) Airdrie 0 Crowd 12,000

It was Thistle's ninth successive win in our best ever run in the top League - 15 games unbeaten. The crowd went mental at half-time when the scores were put up on the board at the City End - Rangers were losing, Thistle were top of the League. I was just a nipper and didn't know what a League was...or that this was as high as we would ever get.

This "system" was superseded by goal average (introduced in 1921-22) and then later goal difference (introduced in 1970-71).
  • We have finished Top 6 in 20 out of our 80 Top Flight campaigns.
  • Achieved 3 seasons in a row 1903-04, 1904-05 and 1905-06.
  • Achieved 5 seasons in a row 1927-28, 1928-29, 1929-30, 1930-31 and 1931-32. Once again the evidence points towards this late 20s / early 30s period as the absolute greatest era of all for Thistle.
  • Season 1962-63 saw Thistle qualify for Europe conventionally via the League for the one and only time.
  • Our last Top 6 finish was away back in season 1980-81 under Peter Cormack (who took over from Bertie Auld halfway through that season).
  • The Top 6 feat seems to be very much the preserve of the old school Thistle. In (relatively) recent times it has only been achieved once in the 70s and once in the 80s.

can we go undefeated in the first quarter and create an all-time record?

based on the effort and performance of last night, we should fear no one, and have absolute belief in ourselves.

it's a big ask to be the promoted team and open the first quarter undefeated, but if the players give their all and play with the tempo, commitment and togetherness of last night (and continuing on from last seasons never give up attitude), and they continue receive the tremendous backing of our support), then it's not beyond archie and this squad of players.

sure, we will need to get a bit more clinical and successful in the final third (and have referees who don't turn a blind eye and bottle some decisions as happened last night), but that improved sharpness should come with more matches.

and if or rather when we do lose a game (whether it's the next game, or some point in the first quarter, or in wet dream territory of beyond 28 in a row undefeated), i'd hope as a support we don't get on the players backs or slate them en-masse ..... for the achievements, flair and unity of this young squad should never be underestimated and we are all highly privelaged to be witness to some of the finest football in the red and yellow any of us have seen in our thistle supporting lifetimes.

always been extremely proud to be a jags supporter, and absolutely loving it right now ..... from the fantastic array of footballers we have right now to the volume and passion amongst the jags support these days is something every thistle supporter should be immensly proud of.

And one more thing .....

Keep the North Stand

RED AND YELLOW
